ASA…I have a bit of a problem and need some advice from an islamic perspective. I am a homeowner, but I have wanted for a while now to rid myself of my mortgage. Alhumdulillah, finally I have reached the point where inshaAllah I will be able to do that.
However, recently we were approached by some a very close family members. They have been a difficult financial situation for many years now, the main earner unable to find a job. They have come into some money recently and want to buy a house but are asking us to take the mortgage out on our names.
I dont know what to do. Please can someone help or just confirm to me that we would be committing just as big a sin as if we were taking the mortgage out for ourselves?

I have heard of this situation before. From what I remember, yes, the burden of the mortgage both legally and Islamically will be yours. Just like the burden of zakat is on the giver of the loan not the taker of the loan.
