Advice needed!

Hi guys,
I’ve been checking out this forum for nearly a month, and am amazed at how nice everyone is! Since I’m getting married in June, IA, and really need some advice, I thought I’d join the forum too. So here goes:

  1. I went to a home-based designer the other day, and we were discussing my wedding jora. She suggested that I wear a farshi gharara since I’m tall. I want a longish shirt with it, but not ridiculously long because I’m wearing a combo of 2 colors and I want both to show… my question is, would it be strange for me to get short sleeves made with the long shirt? FYI, it’s around an inch higher than my knee.

  2. We got a chiffon dupatta with the wedding jora, and I’m confused- should we get it lined with something so it’s slightly stiff? Also, it’s a lighter color than the shirt, so lining it is probably the right thing to do if we want both colors to show, right?

  3. How difficult are farshi ghararas to walk in?

That’s about it for now, but I’ll keep the questions coming! Hope someone replies soon…

Re: Advice needed!

  1. An inch higher than your knee is not long at all for a gharara. Short sleeves will look fine.

  2. Often chiffon dupattas have the border of the gharara fabric or a contrasting color on the inside. A silk jamevar or something.

3 If it's a real farshi, it's not easy. You should practice walking in it with whoever will be elping you enter the hall at the wedding, so that it is lifted gracefully, not awkwardly. There are a lot of pseudofarshis made, same cut, just not as long.

Thank you! So just to be sure, you're saying I should get it lined, right? Like all of the dupatta on silk/silk jamawar or whatever? Or will just a border be ok? Sorry, I'm quite confused!

Also I'm not sure if it's going to be a real farshi or a pseudofarshi, but I'll keep your advice in mind. Thank you again!

Re: Advice needed!

^ don't get the entire dupatta lined- it will not look good. just get a border to "weigh" down the edges, and that is probably what your kaam will be made on too.

a farshi's "gote" is mid calf so your shirt can also be below the knee, fyi. as sahar said, an inch above the knee is the length a shirt is on a regular gharara too.

a real farshi is 14 yards of fabric, i believe. a pseudo farshi is either 8 or 12. if she tells you any less like 6, then its the material for a regular gharara and you don't get the farshi look at all.

Re: Advice needed!

Hmmm. Ok, but then I'm concerned becuase the dupatta will IA be pink, and the shirt is darker than it, so it won't look like a pure pink. Ab kya karoon?

She asked me to get 8 metres I believe....

Re: Advice needed!

well why doesn't she just dye the dupatta the same color as the bottom? they can dye anything in any colour in pakistan. keep in mind though that only pure silk chiffon will dye accurately- the mixed materials will not hold certain colours that well.
ideally you should get pure materials for your entire gharara- top, bottom and dupatta so it holds the kaam well and gives a formal look.
who is this lady and where is she? if she's a home based designer, she should be telling you about all of this.

Re: Advice needed!

yea don't like the dupatta...that seems like a bad dupatta just put the farshi border on it. and get it dyed to match

Re: Advice needed!

Oh, I got all the materials from Hilal Silk, so I think that'll be ok. I'm quite clueless about all of this stuff as you can probably tell. The designer is this friend of a friend, so to say, and we didn't get around to discussing this part. :) I've just had one meeting with her, where she wanted to talk about the kaam so she could give us an estimate. Anyway. Thank you for all your advice!
