Advice for first time parents???

Re: Advice for first time parents???

How could I have forgotten breast feeding and its issues...:(.It is easy for some while not for others.
I second Sahar.I hope it is an easy experience for you,iA...but if not please don't fight yourself and with the baby.I did that when my daughter was 5 months old.We both used to be so frustrated that it was not good.(You can even dig up my old threads on this).
Starting solids was easy, but then a few months into it missy started to have likes and dislikes and still does. There are days I almost lose my patience with her at meal times :(.

Oh.remember to consult the lactation consultants (LC) and the help lines. Here we even had someone come to your place and help out with BFing issues.Get the info beforehand if you can.The hospital has a LC and a hotline.

Re: Advice for first time parents???

you guys are awesome!!!!That's a lot of valuable information especially at the emotional level!

I do plan to breastfeed and I have read about the challenges that some of you girls have faced so I feel kind of prepared for that.. I will be surprised if everything went smoothly :D

Re: Advice for first time parents???

I can vouch for effectiveness of diaper genie , we used it for all of our kids and loved it. You have to know how to use it properly. Do not try to be stingy when it comes to sealing it properly.
Diaper changing is not a rocket science but some people do not know how to do it properly. Watch some youtube videos on this topic.
Always make sure that your baby is clean, well fed , well dressed, happy and smelling good.

Re: Advice for first time parents???

OK ok, I rephrase myself. Diaper genie stinks when you are living in an apartment and only place you can put diaper genie is your attached bathroom that has no windows and an old ventilation fan. :D

Re: Advice for first time parents???

I live in an appt. with an attached bathroom, no windows but a brand new ventilation fan!!! hmmm!!

I guess I may try if I get it for free.. its not something I will buy it for myself considering our dumpster is 100 ft from the front door so it will be just easy to empty out the trash bin everyday! And I have heard that babies poop doesnt start to smell until they start solids!

Mirch.. yep I wont be surprised if I caught my husband watching you tube videos for diaper changes.. we are also taking welcoming baby class in addition to child birth classes so I am sure they will tell us all about changing diapers.

Re: Advice for first time parents???

My daughter was born when we were living in an apartment. And we used to keep that Genie in attached bath. Never had stink issues.

Yep to parents it smells like musk :D but not to the guests who want to hold that cute little cuddly bundle of joy.

Re: Advice for first time parents???

1) enjoy your baby, it is such a beautiful time, done't let small things get in the way.

2) sleep when your baby sleeps, you need all the strength, don't become martha stewart and try to finish everything when 'the baby is sleeping' because you will be dead tired by the time your baby wakes up

3) don't hesitate to ask for help, family, friends, neighbours (if you have good relationship with them)

4) go for massages/pedicures, and let papa take care of the baby for that hour or so :)

Re: Advice for first time parents???

agree 100%...we had to put it in our sunroom during winter, hate that thing, walking up to the garbage can is so much easier, esp on ppls noses :)

Re: Advice for first time parents???

looks like diaper genie works wonder for some and doesnt work for other.. to each their own!! If I get the free one, I will report back with my thoughts about it in couple of months!

dosa.. I plan to sleep once the baby is here.. I haven't slept for more than 3-4 hours for past 13 weeks so my husband has assured me that as soon as the baby is here, I can sleep while he will take care of him! I think we have a nice deal there! and my mom is also here so that's a big help.. I am looking forward to sleeping after the baby is born.. no matter how unrealistic it sounds, I know I am about to crash sooner or later!

Re: Advice for first time parents???

My son's poop was the stinkiest thing we ever smelled, may be because he was on formula, I don't know, even my brother in law who is ped. surgeon said my son's poop was madhoosh karne wali :) they had diaper thingi at home, I used it and poor my BIL used to clean that up every night :(

Re: Advice for first time parents???

^Yeah formula baby poop is different.

Re: Advice for first time parents???

wait a minute.. dont you have to put the diaper in a bag before putting it in diaper genie? I thought it was just a trash can with a cover.. no???

I have never seen poopy diapers going in a trash without being tied in a plastic bag or something like that!!we are collecting plastic bags for that :D

Re: Advice for first time parents???

The diaper genie has special deoderizing bags. You're not going to want to get a separate bag with all of those diapers.

We don't have a diaper genie but we have scented trash bags. I empty those out regularly. Most of the time the smells are contained, but not always.

Re: Advice for first time parents???

though diapers are tied up in a long string of trash bags, they still smell. Its one of those smells that you cant feel if you are inside for a while, but if you are removing that long trash bag, or come from outside, you can immediately notice.

In short, to me, diaper genie is maybe more convenient way of disposing diaper than in tied plastic bags, but in the latter case, you throw away your trash in 24-48 hours. Diaper genie can hold up to 2 dozens tied up diapers and I dont know how many parents empty it before it is full, which means old stinkie (tied up) diapers sitting there for 4-5 days. Yes platic bag can hold the smell in, but its not a vacuum sealed bag.

Re: Advice for first time parents???

I dont know people with babies in my circle except just one family.. they have a 3 year old and a 2 year old in the house and never and ever I have smelled a diaper there.. I have lievd there, I have gone from outside, I visit them regularly but I have never come across a stinky house!!!

She has a diaper genie that she hardly ever uses so plans to give it to me.. I have changed the diapers for 3 year old sometimes for #1 and just put it in the bathroom trash can but never smelled poppy diapers there.. I need to ask her what does she do!! I never thought it was such a big deal until now!

Re: Advice for first time parents???

^ depends on baby's popp to be honest, some are more bearable than the others, ours was the later case.

Re: Advice for first time parents???

that is another thing, diaper genie is waste of money cause after your baby grows from infant to toddler, you would not need it and then you would like to give it away to someone ..

well in your case, cause its coming fro free, I say go for it.

Re: Advice for first time parents???

^ I have barely changed a poopy diaper since my daughter was 8/9 months old. Thanks to her struggles with pooping, the best thing has been putting her on the potty to go. It's only been when she's been sick. Maybe your friend has done the same.

But #1 diapers have a very sharp odor as they build up. I've taken to using candles in those bathrooms regularly. The best way to keep the odors pleasant once the trash has been emptied (yes the plastic of the trashcans holds the smell).

I can't believe I'm discussing this.

Re: Advice for first time parents???

LOL I know..and I cant believe I was reading all of that while having my lunch at work... i had to put it away to finish reading the thread :D

ok so what else do we need to know? co sleeping in first few days? We have a bassinet in our room and crib in his nursery..sometimes I feel like I will want him right there with me and other times it scares the heck out of me.. my husband or I may squish him!! BUT our bassinet is not reachable by arm so I guess we will have to get up everytime he needed to be fed, changed, etc?

Re: Advice for first time parents???

I dont have a diaper genie.I keep a trashcan with a lid in the washroom, which btw is very well ventilated (fan and window).
I empty the trash every evening, mostly once a day or sometimes twice a day.Not only dirty diapers stink bad,but wet diapers do too...and if you keep them in there for more than a day wrapped up in 3 plastic bags, they still stink up the whole place..!
Since I never used the genie so I am not sure how effective it is for containing smells. So far,the trash can with the lid, diapers wrapped up in plastic bags, daily taking out of trash and lots of air freshener in the bathroom (I always had that, even before the baby) has worked for us.
