is it possible for an adult to learn swimming, (well someone like me) who is panically scared of going underwater.
and who are better instructors, females or males, i would prefer a female for obvious reasons.
any experience?

People below 60 have good tendency of memory power available. Should be easy for you if you are below 60.
Re: adult learning swimming
Although I can't say with first hand experience for adults, I'd say that it all depends on having a good instructor.
I was 11 and I still couldn't swim as we had moved around a lot when I was younger and I always seemed to miss the years when classes went swimming (the age varied from school to school). For one term I tried and tried but I couldn't pick it up. The next term we got a new teacher and within 2 lessons I had learnt to swim. By the end of the year I could do all the strokes, diving, picking up bricks from the deep end of the pool etc.
Once you have confidence in the water, it's real easy to pick everything up. And getting that confidence just depends on a really good instructor.
Re: adult learning swimming
so u guys mean, I should try it!
now i have to find a pool only for females, now that will be a hard task here.
Re: adult learning swimming
^It's hard everywhere. Good luck though.
Re: adult learning swimming
I'll be bias Saadia - I think if you want to learn how to swim first - women instructors are better.
Once you learn how to manipulate underwater, time breathing - its pretty easy.
You can learn to swim in less than 2 weeks - 20-30 minutes a day. I have taught kids, adults - elderly folks to swim. The great thing is there is no going back. You are swimmer for life :)
Later on - If you want to sharpen your time, speed and movements - maybe you can go with an instructor who swims competively.

What NJ says ..
My daughters are going to swimming classes and they do have adult classes. I am planing to take but unfortunately they dont fit my schedule.
What NJ says ..
that you need a female swim instructor :)
Re: adult learning swimming
for adults, group swim classes rather than one on one classes show the fastest learning.
get a good instructor, don't have some friend teach you. atleast not initially.
try to get a hold of some Total Immersion DVDs or books. this will give you an idea from a beginner's perspective of what the hell you are supposed to do when you are in water, instead of kicking and flailing as hard as possible.
and practice every evening for 5 mins in bed.
ok just kidding about the last one. i think..
that you need a female swim instructor :)
toba toba
yes
Re: adult learning swimming
it’s possible for an adult to learn to swim… i used to be a great swimmer as a kid but i lost the skill when i grew up… ![]()
Part of that was to do with the fact that i practically lost one arm and broke another leg twice… ![]()
But yeah with a little practice theres no reason why you cant swim again…
Re: adult learning swimming
thanks, this is really encouraging me.
Re: adult learning swimming
Yes adults can learn swimming too. I would go for a female one if I were you.
