Is it compulsory for a wife to change her last name to that of her husband’s after marriage? Even if it’s not, why do people do so? What if the husband has a family name that has been used for centuries, what name do you adopt then?
Example:
Wife’s original name: Rabika Rahman
Husband’s name: Naveed Latif
Wife’s adopted name: Rabika Naveed Latif or Rabika Latif?
Forgive me for my ignorance but women don’t usually change their last names after marriage here.

if Latif is Naveed's father name then wife's adopted name would be Rabika Naveed.
it can be Rabika Rahman Naveed as well.

Latif is the husband's great great great grandfather's name. All his cousins have the same last name too..

It's not compulsory. In fact, it's discouraged in Islam.

in islam a woman doesnot have to change her last name once she is married. its her choice.
but a recent study into this topic i came to realise that its actually haraam for a woman to go for her husbands name or his family name.
because your surname tells you who your father is and husband cannot be your father.

aisi batoun mein forun Islam yaad aa jata hei. werna bhoola rehta hei. Like an inconvenience that we would rather do without.

Well a wife is her husband's property, isn't it? If you pay so much (mahr) for the product, then you do have exclusive rights on it.
