Adopting Earthquake Orphans

Re: Adopting Earthquake Orphans

Just curious, which country in the world requires that a child (whether YOURS or ADOPTED) be given your name?

Re: Adopting Earthquake Orphans

^ You know, I didn't want to open my mouth, because I don't know if this is some sort of law in the USA...

But from what I recall your guardian's last name does not have to be your last name. But I don't know if parents who adopt are given "parental" status or "guardian" status. So I'm not sure if in the US, they force you to give your last name to the child.

After all , for some orphans, they only have a first name - no knowledge of a last name.

**Adoption of orphans banned
**
ISLAMABAD: The government has banned the adoption of orphans to prevent the abuse of these children.

A meeting to review the situation in quake-hit areas was told that all such cases would be referred to the Ministry for Women’s Development, and that three centres were being established for such children in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. staff report

Re: Adopting Earthquake Orphans

^ expected, and a responsible and commendable act by the govt. only when it is confirmed that kids have no next of kin who can take them in is when they should be in adoption programs, and even then with thtorough background checks of ppl adopting them to prevent sick bastaardos from exploiting lil kids.

Their website doesn’t show that they have any sponsorship programs… are you sure its right site?

Adoption

I hope the mods will allow this thread to remain here, for greater exposure.

My question is related to adopting an orphan of the Pakistan earthquake tragedy. Is there anyone here considering adopting an orphan?

Basically, I spoke with my mother about this matter. We are seriously considering this, however we do face a great lack of information on this matter. We are a US based family, so matters become more complicated.

Just to get the ball rolling, I am hoping anyone can provide some insight on how to approach this matter? My mother will be contacting Edhi tonight, however from the Pakistani "government" side, are there any rules and regulations to consider?

Any info will be appreciated..

Read this thread http://www.paklinks.com/gs/showthread.php?t=195762

Re: Adoption

eklipse, read that thread, and if ur family is serious about adoption, start your homestudy and get the immigration work and background check done in US, it will take some time. This will ensure that once Pakistan reopens international adoptions which are temporarily suspended, that you have all your paperwork sorted out.

but read the thread that captain is pointing u to and u should get soem good info.

Re: Adoption

Here is a report from today’s Dawn…its very very sad but has further info on adoption and the hold that the gov’t has put on all adoptions:
http://www.dawn.com/2005/10/16/nat34.htm

I’m sure that, in time, adoptions will resume. THese poor little amputees are the ones who will be most in need of western families, where they can get the support and the technology available here so that they can thrive.

In the meantime, maybe think about supporting organizations who help these little ones. I’d like to suggest to the gov’t that since there is such an overwhelming number of people wanting to adopt maybe they could set up a “sponsor a child” type of fund, where you send your donations for a specific child, receive updates on their progress etc. There are funds like this which are run the the UN but not specific to earthquake orphans…
