Re: admission in nyc and columbia universities

no body went to ny from pak for studies..
no boday knows about it

You are right....Once the IVY League colleges were touring Scandinavia to talk about their admissions and stuff....when they came to my city they actually said that you have to have at least two academic reference letters and they look for students who are more than just students, i.e.voluntary work and projects which you have done and it has to be documented etc.

Re: admission in nyc and columbia universities

oh i c but if u have green card then is there any benifit?

Re: admission in nyc and columbia universities

and what score they want for an admission in bachelor or graduation?
what do u mean by two academic refrences?

Re: admission in nyc and columbia universities

and whr do u live in ny?

Re: admission in nyc and columbia universities

I think the best thing would be if you checked their websites. You will find all the details you need....it depends on what program you are interested in applying.
Acadamic references: reference letter from a professor, head of your school etc. stating your academic qualities etc. AGAIN check their websites.
I don't live in NY......

Re: admission in nyc and columbia universities

u know better ..u r in newyork…u should tell me..

Re: admission in nyc and columbia universities

I think you mean NYU and Columbia. Columbia is REALLY hard to get into for undergrad, even if you live in the states. Are you in pakistan? their tuition is somewhere around $40K, and then living in the city is REALLY expensive. Since both are located in NYC, a lot of people want to attend them. Yes, esp. for columbia, you do need extracurrics or a really good essay in addition to stellar grades and SAT scores, you have to bring something more to the table, because there are SO many people who have good scores and grades and columbia is an ivy league school. NYU is not as hard to get in, but again it is really expensive, and really, you're paying for location, there's nothing too special about it (no offence to any NYUers!). Don't get me wrong, i have a couple friends from nyu and i visited and it's really nice (except for the main library, it's depressing) but I wouldn't want to put myself and my family in loans to send me there. do you need help choosing a good school? How old are you/what grade? or do you mean you're looking for grad school? b/c if so, most of what i told you is relevant only for undergrad. Grad school doesn't really require the voluntary stuff, but this depends on which ones and which departments. Not sure about columbia and NYU but there are a lot of foreign grad students in most schools, and I'm sure most of them didn't do any extracurrics.

Re: admission in nyc and columbia universities

40,000 is for 4 years?

Per Year. They assume a full course load, and living expenses.

Re: admission in nyc and columbia universities

nope, just one! actually that's the price tag for many of the more prestigious private undergrads here and even the not-as-famous private schools range from $30-35K per year TUITION only. you still have to think about living expenses. SOmetimes you can get scholarships too though, and that helps. easier to get scholarships at the smaller, less competitive schools.

Re: admission in nyc and columbia universities

what major are we talking?

is this for yourself?

gmat is only required for MBA

for undergrad admissions SAT is needed

most unis prefer well rounded individuals so extra curriculars showing external interests, leadership abilities, etc are considered important.
and it is not just some extra curricular certificates, the question becomes what you did, why, and what exactly ddi u do there..i.e. did you just walk in a cancer fundraiser walk, which is not a huge deal or did you organize it?

reference letters are needed by pretty much any university. they also ask for essays, so composition skills are important, as well as what you have to say.

all admission detauls for NYU are here.

NYU > Undergraduate Admissions > Applying for Admission > Freshman Applicants > General Requirements

and for columbia are here.

what eassays r u talking about?

Re: admission in nyc and columbia universities

statements of purpose.

did you look at the links he posted yet?

if she did inter in pakistan she will probably need to take TOEFL as well. SAT is needed.
Intermediate is fully recognized for admission to university.
average marks are not going to get her in NYU or columbia, unless she has stellar SAT, some really good extracurriculars, recommendations etc.

I gave you links to the admission requirements and process for both unis, please read them. They require essays as part of admission process, and the essays are very important, especially if the grades are avg.
