Adenoids

My son 6 yrs has adenoids hypertrophy. Whenever he contracts colds etc, especially in winter, it is really tough for him. He snores a lot while sleeping and I can clearly tell that he has having difficulty breathing while asleep. I have tried many options but nothing seems to be working. Have tried Aleopathic and homeopathic medicines, home treatments etc but nothing seems to be working. Pls help me out as what should I do. I would like to do my best to avoid surgery. so let me know of any tip, remedy that has worked. thanks.

Re: Adenoids

have you got sleep study done? my nephew had similar issues. dr did sleep study and said he has sleep apnea and was struggling to breath and he got operation done. struggling to breath should be concern. get him checked and he will most likely need an operation.

Re: Adenoids

^ well, as I said I have been to many doctors and yes the last resort is surgery but they say that he is too young for this surgery. if nothing works out, we will have to go for it but I would prefer to avoid it as I have heard that homeopathic treatment can cure this condition.

My nephew was 3 wen he had an operation. My daughter is 4 and one dr yold us to get it dne.

With Sleep apea as child struggles to breath could be dangerous.

We havefamily history. Nearly every one gt operation dne at some stages after trying different things.

Get sleep study dne and see for how long ur child struggles to breath. Make ur decision on result.

Re: Adenoids

ok thx^

tell me about the operation. how long it took to complete the procedure and how was the recovery. any long term effects

Re: Adenoids

My son is in the same situation. I would suggest getting it taken care of ASAP, because if he does have a restricted airway that is causing sleep apnea, it can effect a whole lot of other things. In my son's case, his toungue naturally juts forward because of his mouth breathing, and that had causes overcrowding of his teeth and his jaw is misaligned. It also affects his soeech develepmant, he's been in speech therapy at school
since kindergarten. We are in the process of scheduling his surgery after getting the sleep study done. His adenoids and tonsils will be removed, and at the same his dental work will be taken care of too. It's all simple a simple day procedure, and at young age, recovery and downtime is minimal.

i actually had the same surgery when I was 12 yrs old.

Re: Adenoids

We are in the same boat with our son. Our pediatrician has not insisted on surgery, as tonsils and adenoids help the immune system as well, and he has recommended nasal sprays. However, at the end of the day, if sleep apnea is an issue, then surgery is recommended, which seems to be the case with our son. The surgery is not long, and the patient is out in a day. Lots of ice cream is the reward afterwards.

Re: Adenoids

Difficulties in breathing is dangerous for a kid.so tk steps towords it

Re: Adenoids

update

My son is scheduled for his surgery on March 7th. Will report back postop.

Re: Adenoids

I took my son to two ENT doctors and both suggested to get the surgery done ASAP as both his adenoids and tonsils are quite big in size. Tonsils were diagnosed as 'kissing tonsils'. Couldn't understand how his tonsils remained undiagnosed by pediatricians. Finally, decided to have the surgery done. It is all over. Surgery was done day before yesterday and my son ma sha Allah is well and quickly recovering. breathes smoothly now. Thanks to Allah (swt) and all of you.

Re: Adenoids

A few things that came up during our discussion with the doctor are:

1) bottle feeding should be abandoned as early as possible

2) ears need not be cleaned as they have natural mechanism of pushing the waste out in the form of flakes. cleaning using earbuds pushes the wax and dirt back and may lead to ear infections and hearing problems

3) Ablution (wadhu) especially cleaning nose is a good practice to avoid infections like adenoiditis.

Re: Adenoids

My son remained alright for a week after the surgery but today he has fever 101 deg F and lethargic, vomited a couple of times stringy transparent mucous. any similar experience with those whose kids have had similar surgery?

Re: Adenoids

I don’t have a kid that’s getting them out… But I may be. My ENT told me my tonsils/adenoids are enlarged and she made an appointment for a sleep study which will probably lead to them being taken out. For those of you who are second guessing getting your children’s out.. DO IT NOW! If not now, they’ll have to get it done as adults and the recovery is much more painful and a lot longer. I wish my mom had taken mine out when I was younger… at 28 I’m going to be in the worst pain of my life. People have described it as being worse than child birth :smack:.

Re: Adenoids

I’m back with the update on my son. He had his surgery exactly one week ago. The ENT said his adenoids were so enlarged he had almost 100% blockage of his airway

Recovery is going ok, kind of slow though. He’s extremely lethargic and is not eating or drinking enough, even though he’s off the pain meds now. He’s not complaining of pain…no fever…didn’t have any bleeding or cough up anything so that’s good, but i have heard from others that the coughing up of mucous is normal. We’re just worried about dehydration now.

Other observations: the meds cause constipation…his voice has changed (he sounds like a little girl right now lol)…he’s still snoring and coughing on an off but the nurses said that will go away within 2 weeks.
