"Addiction" to exercise

Everyone says when u work out, u get addicted to the endorphins, u get the high energy and stuff.. well im not at that point where Im “addicted” to xercise, i dont feel that “high” that everyones on about.. am i doing it wrong? or not enough or am i jus being too impatient? How long/what intensity does it take to get to that point?

Re: "Addiction" to exercise

Never heard of such an addiction...

Addiction, biologically, is the emotional or physical dependance of a person on a specific substance, most usually a drug.

I don't excercise, but I have friends that do and they always say they get lazy and stop so I guess the point must not be easy to reach.

How much do you excercise and what type of excercise is it? Some people just love to walk but that couldnt be an addiction to excercise, right?

Re: “Addiction” to exercise

i SERIOUSLY think i am bad influence on u babez.. :hugz:

ps, depending upon life and what/how u think, it could take like 3-4 months..

Re: "Addiction" to exercise

lol.Addiction like that does exist. There was an article in readers' digest or some other magazing on that.I am an example of that.I have been jogging or running for the last 7 years.I do about 4 miles, 4 to 5 times a week, plus some weights.Recently because of some knee pain much like shoaib akhtar's knee pain I've not been able to run regularly which has caused me a lot of frustration because I am addicted to the high that athletes get when endorphins kick in their bodies after a long work out...endorphins make you feel happy and over the moon and they are good for a lot of other reasons as well. The article said that athletes experience same sort of high after excercise as drug addicts do after taking drugs..however its not harmful and addictive as drugs are.
Coming back to you.I think you need to just take it slowly and let your muscle train before increasing the intensity of your work out or your body will break down...and once your body and mind starts to like doing it you will get addicted to it a bit which can only be good for your health and over all fitness.

Re: "Addiction" to exercise

Pakap, maybe poor choice of words on my part.. but everyone touts the benefits of exericse, the immediate physical ones and the emotional/mental ones that take abit longer to develop.. not the food/drug/sex addiction, but the good adciction if thas possible.. like u wanna exercise, u feel weird if you don't, etc.. yeah and the endorphins like desidude said... :)

Re: "Addiction" to exercise

...well for me exercise as been the corner stone and a part of me from a very young age and always will be.

Re: "Addiction" to exercise

Sara - yes, it does exist. What happens is that after exercising for a few weeks and months (religiously), your body will crave it daily or almost every day. When you sit around, your mind starts to wonder off trying to figure out why you are not running or doing weights etc.

I think thats what they mean by a high. Your body makes certain chemicals thats it starts to want time and time again. The only thing is that in order to get the high, you have to keep doing exercise on a regular basis. It does happen ! Its not a myth :)

Re: “Addiction” to exercise

Mm diva, thas what i figured, that it’ll take time… it’s been 2 weeks that i’ve acutally done it (instead of talking :halo: ) so we’ll c i guess

Re: "Addiction" to exercise

Just out of curiosity... Kaunsi excercise kurti ho?

Re: "Addiction" to exercise

I agree with Ms Diva. After I finished college, i couldnt find a job....my lot in life was to read the help-wanted ads and try to drum up interviews. Since I had been on gymnastics team and dance ensemble etc, I felt the need to continue physical exercise and due to lack of space (a cartwheel or handspring would cause me to take down a wall or 2)...I turned to weight training. YES my goodness it can become an addiction, you do feel the endorphins (or whatever you wanna call 'em)...when you work out on such a regular basis, your muscles get all "pumped up" and so do you.

Re: "Addiction" to exercise

Well I dunno abt endorphins..but I sure do feel bad abt myself for not training..so what happens is that I train intensiholicly for a couple of months..get all buffed..and then drop training for some months... U DO feel more active and fresh when ur training on a regular basis. Guess it has sumfing to do with the body getting alot more oxygen out to every muscles and stuff. Just excerise its good for u..dont ask too many questions.
