okay.. but its not a phenomenon that is new and started with Farhan. Even Farhan's step mom 'Shabana Azmi' sung few songs.
There was a time, when actors / actresses needed to sing. So, people like Sehgal and Noorjehan sung songs for their movies. Kishore Kumar was also an actor. In between this trend of singers-cum-actor became a rare phenomenon. On and off, people like Salma Agha got recognition in both the fields. Even Amitabh sung for his movies.
In recent times, its more of technology than voice, that bring us actor-cum-singer talent.

In start it was simultaneous. You could not get a role in movie (lead role), if you couldn't sung.
Later, it just became both way traffic. A good looking singer (take example of Sonu Nigam) was selected as an actor or people just tried to give other field a chance. example of Amir Khan or Salman Khan singing for 2-3 movies is same like Lata ji's acting in few movies.

obviously, voice can't beat image in most of the cases. Otherwise, today's singer are not behind from actors in popularity race.
