Simply put....ActiveX is microsoft's software component technology. It enables people to sell (license) just code components rather than whole software.
On the web its microsoft's version of Java Applets. ActiveX never caught on due to some so called security problems (and because the Authenticode certificate is $400 which small developers cant afford). We use it on GS in AG.
