I was sitting in the bus, on my way home, when a older women sits next to me. In her hand is a copy of the Bible. She opens it up and starts reading. Me being the curious person I am, peer over her shoulder and start reading the Bible myself, here is what it says,
1-Corinthians Chapter 11
**
3
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. **
Achtung: Note the head of woman is man. This is fairly explicit. **
4
Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
5
But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. **
Achtung: This almost sounds like an invitation to wear a head scarf. Similar to the Islamic Khimar/Hijab. **
6
For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. **
Achtung: “Let the woman be shorn” - this is odd, if when praying, a female doesn’t cover her head, it should be shaved? Sort of an odd punishment **
7
For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. **
Achtung: “woman is the glory of the man.” Again very explicit. Men are superior to woman - this is obvious from this passage, this is unlike Qur’anic passages which state legal rulings pertaining to inheritance and witnesses in business dealings, which are interpreted as implying male supremacy over women. This is explicit and direct. **
8
For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. **
Achtung: Once again, reinstating whats already been said. **
9
Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. **
Achtung: Interesting, here it is even made more clear - “woman” was “created” “for the man”. **
13
Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
14
Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
15
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
16
But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God. **
Achtung: So women have to cover there heads, if they have long hair. I found this interesting, a bit of a parrallel with Islamic modesty. **
*
I don’t really know the context of the chapter, so I can’t really comment all too much about it. But it does seem sexist at first glance, for more sexist than anything that exists ‘to be manipulated’ in the Qur’an. What do you think?
Achtung
PS: My intention isn’t to ridicule the Bible, I’m just trying to understand this particular chapter. Much the way Christians attempt to understand what they percieve to be controversial sections of the Qur’an. If any Christians, could help, it would be wonderful ![]()
