Achieving an antique finish on an artificial "gold" set.

Hi guys,

I have bought my bridal outfits from pakistan in such a limited time, and consequently rushed and bought my bridal sets (artificial) which are stunning, but I didn’t get time to get the antique finish polished on. However, when buying a few simple sets earlier on in my visit I was shown by a jewellery store owner a pot of varnish type stuff that they “polish” onto the sets to give the set that antique/copper type finish, and wanted to try it out for myself on my sets!

I have some old pieces of fake gold jewellery which I will try it on first in case it goes horribly wrong, but i haven’t got the foggiest idea what that stuff is they use?? Anyone got any idea?? ANy help would be much appreciated!!!

Re: Achieving an antique finish on an artificial "gold" set.

Ummm..... Don't you have any jewelry shops where you live? I think polishing any piece should be left to professionals. You can still try to polish the old pieces of fake jewelry that you have, no harm in that but do look for someone who can help you out.

What if the varnish leaves stains on your skin or clothes?

I live in the UK, and unfortunately in a city that has hardly any asian community so no jewellers etc whatsoever..

But, thanks so much for the email - I will definetly be dropping her an email!

Posho, I found a few jewelry polishers/shops in Birmingham. I don’t know whether they’d be helpful or not but I am posting their info. You can contact them and ask:

I am! Thanks! :bb:

Find out and let me know. I’ll do another search if these don’t work out.

gone!

The following above are my sets, the top one is my baraat one and I really think it will match my outfit more if it has an antique finish! :(

Re: Achieving an antique finish on an artificial "gold" set.

Ah, missed those! :(

Re: Achieving an antique finish on an artificial "gold" set.

Wow, i just did something like this the other day for my friends wedding this weekend... just get some nail polish remover ( non acetone) rub it over the set with a cotton pad make sure you don't go both way so you do it one direction. leave it in the sun for a few hours and hair spray it to bring the 'chamak' back.

Learnt this tip in pak :) ... if you lived near me i would offer to do it! i enjoy it weirdly enough xx

Re: Achieving an antique finish on an artificial "gold" set.

wow great tip

Re: Achieving an antique finish on an artificial "gold" set.

SoniaA - do you mean I need to do those steps directly on the front of the set or on the back of it??

Re: Achieving an antique finish on an artificial "gold" set.

Posho at the front , you can hair spray the back to stop the artifical set colouring transferring to your neck, ears etc.

You cannot go wrong at all with this :) my 10 year old neice can do it!

Re: Achieving an antique finish on an artificial "gold" set.

SoniaA - is it requirement to leave it in the sun?? The reason I ask is because its not sunny at all in the UK at the moment. The rain won't stop! ;/

Re: Achieving an antique finish on an artificial "gold" set.

Posho! you wan't the antique look you have to let the colour fade a little in the sun , it makes it more authentic looking!

Do you have a conservatory ? or somewhere where natural light will shine ? ( next to a window?)

..... just don't leave it in the rain if it was like yesterday :| that rain was bad!

Re: Achieving an antique finish on an artificial "gold" set.

apologies for all the questions but how long in the sun? :$

Re: Achieving an antique finish on an artificial "gold" set.

Depends on how antique you want to go ( i usually leave it for 4/5 hours leave it for a day in the light)

If you show me pics i can tell you how long i'd leave it for :)

If it's your wedding sets you're talking about I really wouldn't advise doing anything to them yourself...you live in Birmingham right? There are so many Asian jewellery stores there. Can't you ask them whether they offer the particular polishing service you're after?
