Achievement!

5 years of Bhuto’s democracy, 10 years of Zia’s Islamic Period, 10 years of democratic musical chair, 10 year of mushy’s development period and 2.4 years of current democratically elected govt and we have achieved unachievable

no wonder lots of people worship the current political elite

Re: Achievement!

While we blame governments for not doing much for the education sector, we need to look at ourselves as well.

Indian government’s policies have been more or less consistent in terms of education but the literacy rate varies from almost 100% ito 50% in different states there. The people in southern states like Kerala are extremely concerned about their childrens’ education while people from some states in the north are not.

For me, a lot depends on peoples’ attitude towards education in addition to government’s conviction for educating its people. We need to be proactive for promoting education in our neighbourhood, towns, cities, etc. While we highlight the ineffective governance from our rulers, we need to appreciate and support efforts like:

^^ I agree people needs to take initiative... but how

Our literacy rate is differs in different part.. e.g. in Southern Punjab where Jageerdars have the final say, they do not allow advanced education system, any attempt to do so faces severe consequences yet the same wadera have no objection in Deeni madaris... as a result, people suffer... worst part is, in these and most other rural areas, having education (other than what molvi sahib teaches) is a sin... and bigger problem is, these jageerdar themselves are in the govt and use govt machinery to ensure the illiteracy remains as it is..

If someone have to study in these parts then they need to migrate to bigger cities now not everyone can afford this luxury... the one who afford seldom return back to their home town...

In bigger cities atleast people have access / option to approach schools, although not the best but still something good... most of them are privately operated and i believe they have done good job although they could have done better...

The private institute you mentioned above are there and they are doing well but again, can they reach the masses? the majority which lives in the rural areas, yes few of these educational institutes do work in remote areas but what is the % they target? i know many in Southern Punjab who are talented who wants to study but couldn't do it because of the right infrastructure is not available

Anyway, we as individuals have to come forward but at same time, govt need to develop some sound policies for the education

PS: I have only spoken about Southern Punjab, i don't know what are the conditions in Centerl Sindh, Khyber and Balochistan, i heard in my times, things are much worse, hope they are better now...

Re: Achievement!

If the government is doing nothing, do we have to do the same? The institutes I mentioned are doing great but as you said, they can only do so much and reach out to few people and that is where we need to come forward and help.

There are many amazing people and organisations working in Pakistan in different areas and the least we can do is help them with our time, money, prayers and most importantly, contacts. If you read history of these organisations, most of them started with a single determined person more or less like you and me. If we do not give anything to our country, we should not expect much in return either.

http://www.sedc.org.pk/portal/directories/ngo.php is a good reference for looking up organisations and their achievements in Pakistan. I would say a few of them are in the ‘business’ of social work, but most of the others are doing some great work.

Interestingly, if you look up for organisations working for ‘peace’ in the drop down menu, you might be disappointed!

Re: Achievement!

^^ I am sure that this are no the only NGOS we have, there are lot more than these but the problem is, along with private individual, Govt has to step in with concrete policies... ( and not something like Parha likha Punjab)

As of now the education policy of Pakistan is as follows: www.edu.gov.pk/edupolicy.htm

Re: Achievement!

Do you know how much budget has been spent on Education as compared to Defense? Look at the ratios since partition. You will get the answer. You reap what you sow.

Actually i want to forget about govt. official.. and i am aware of the services, private individual and/or institutes are providing and i salute them for this…

as far as govt officials or politicians are concerned, below is my personal experience

near to our house in Lahore, 10 meter of road was in a mess, needless to say that we approached everyone from peon to top notch minister to get it done and nothing happened, so we the jawans from ahl-e-muhala collected chanda and got a private contractor and start the repair work… on day one of the project, few land cruisers carrying PML flaq ( i forget to ask them the alphabet) saying that we shouldn’t be doing it and should come to them… and while they were there insisting to have that project named after them… PPP came over and started the same thing… and when we refused to politicize the project, police came in and held me and my friends for damaging the govt. properties…

And it does not help when corrupt politicians and officials dip their hands into what is left for the education budget.

Don't forget to look at the same ratios for India.

Re: Achievement!

You are comparing apples with oranges. Again see what is %age of education budget in Pakistan? So people are uneducated or educated who are even worst than even uneducated, are due to corrupt politicians only??? What a BS logic.

Re: Achievement!

Then why India is better of in every field including education as comparison with Pakistan? Don\'t give me the BS of corruption logic as India is not immune of corruption either.

First: don't jump to conclusion before getting any answer.

Secondly: A lot more is required for analysis. Howcome India can get as sincere people like Manmohan Singh as leader but all we get is Nawaz, Altaf, Bibi, Zardari etc.

Re: Achievement!

No I am not jumping on any conclusion. It is you who brought India here. The answer to your question is quite hard swallow. Why India get sincere leaders because of biggest democracy in the world. Where as Nawaz, Altaf, Zardari etc came out from the wombs of dictators. Imagine how ugly were the dictators who delivered these people.

True.

But leaders come from the people. We must be doing something very wrong to deserve such leaders and dictators. About time we start thinking what WE can do to improve the situation instead of waiting for farishtas to come rule our country?

Re: Achievement!

The only way is to continue the democratic system. Let the people screen out politicians who can not deliver in successive elections. There is absolutely no way out. If adventurers strike again as in the past, Pakistan perhaps will not be on the world map any longer. Due to diversity of people, a bloody revolution is also ruled out as some idiots here are thinking of that as a solution.
