Achar

So I’m planning on making achar (adrak) this weekend. It will be my first time, so does anyone have any recipes or tips they can offer?

Thanks.

Re: Achar

:hinna: never made it … but I hope someone here will know the deal with achars :@:

Re: Achar

Thanks Chicken Biryani. If it comes out okay, I'll let you know in case you ever want to try and make it too.

Re: Achar

my grandparents used to make it (aam ka) and then distribute it to the family :@:

people love free achaar...who woulda thought lawl.

Re: Achar

Aww, that's sweet. I like aam ka achar too, but adrak is my favourite. I figure since I like to eat it, I should learn to make it too.

Re: Achar

yeah coz its really hard to make ...takes all the expensive ingredients and time and energy as well ... so it was considered a good gift in those times .. bless our elders :@:

I love home made achar ... mango and lemon achar ... I tried a few recipes , but ended up throwing the stuff in the bin :(

Re: Achar

I love arabic pickle ... if anyone knows how to make them, please share your recipe , I will be eternally indebted to you :@:

Specially the mirch in vinegar and carrots

Re: Achar

Does anyone have a spare grandparent they can send my way? Then I could have all the achar I can eat.

Chicken Biryani, oh yes! The ones in vinegar, as opposed to oil, are awesome.

Re: Achar

oh I like those Arabic pickle thing....
My ammi makes this thing where she puts carrots, cucumbers, cauliflower and ginger slices in vinegar with some black mustard seeds. Its really good.Don't know how she makes it though....!

Re: Achar

chipsie , time to find out and tell us :@: ...

Re: Achar

Okay, so I made it. Its not ready to eat yet but I'll take a picture later and you guys can tell me if it looks like how achar is supposed to.

Re: Achar

we make it every year ... as half of it is eaten by my sister raww ..

we make mixed one .. where we add .. nimboo small ones, gaajar, aam, mirch .. deli ..dont know what they called in engllish - cant get em from uk ..we get em from pak ..and gobi .. and ofcorse .. add in the achaar masala you can get from you local paki shops ..and add it .. before adding in the masala .. all the above ingredients are salted and left for sometime .. after which the masala is added then finally the mustard oil ..and then left for around 3 weeks for it to 'gal' i.e. can be eaten ..

well this is how i remember being made .. others may have other ways..

Re: Achar
