accutane

Assalamu alaykum

I was at my doctors today, who mentioned that he is considering refering me to a derm for my acne, and he mentioned the best bet was accutane. Currently, I am taking dianette, been over 3 months and the effects have been so so. To be honest, my acne may not be as bad as others, but it is leaving me quite upset.

My acne started over 2 years ago, at the age of 24, to which I was prescribed antibiotics for 6 months, which cleared it up. But recently, (a few months ago) it came back, and I was subsequently prescribed diannette.

I am looking for mashwara (advice) from others: should I go with my doctor’s recomendation (am going to see him tomorrow morning again), or should i continue with dianette and hope to see results? My hesitation is that, Allah willing, I am planning to marry soon, maybe within the year, so am fearful of the side effects.

Re: accutane

hey Summayyah here are few other treads in which accutane was discussed. I personally have never been on it and wouldn’t recd. it to u, since ur acne isn’t really bad.

i m on solodyn (antibiotics) i took it for a full month and now only take it right before my periods (thats when i tend to break out). Also i use Duac and differin for my face.
I have also been using a clay mask from Body shop…which is great and rose water as toner.
I drink a lot of water…all of these things together have helped my skin a lot.
hope this helps

Re: accutane

BCP's won't really show their effect for about 4 months, so i would recommend waiting for another couple of months to really let it show its thing. do go to a derm, consult him/her and hopefully he will recommend something topical for you for the occasional breakouts you will get.

Re: accutane

BCP is not a permanent cure for acne, it will only prevent acne aslong as you keep taking it. Accutane is PERMANENT cure. It's expensive but totally worth it. I took Accutane for 5 months and I don't have a single zit tll now. ( i took it for july-november) Iniitally it causes a really bad break out (initial breakout) but after 2 months, it disappears usually. I tried many other creams before accutane like topical tretinoins (RetinA). Nothing worked like Accutane.
However, you shouldn't get pregnant while on accutane because its highly teratogenic and can cause birth defects if you're pregnant and continue to take accutane. Your doctor wlil tell you to take BCP while you take Accutane if you're married.
If you're getting married quickly like in less than 3 months then dont start accutane because it causes an initial breakout. But if you still have atleast 5-6 months till wedding, then start accutane now. you wont regret it. I think going on Accutane was the best thing i have done for myself.

Re: accutane

Accutane is NOT permanent for everybody.

For 70% of the people it is. And if the first course isn't effective(rarely) a second one can be taken and it can be permanent.
Oral isotretinoin is the most effective solution to acne so far, especially adult acne. Nothing else comes close.

Yeah Accutane is supposed to be the only solution that really works, but it needs to be prescribed by a derm

Re: accutane

Somebody in my family took Accutane at age 19 and it worked very well. I think it got rid of around 90-100% of the acne, but took atleast 2-3 months for the results to appear, out of the 6-month required for dosage. I'm no doctor, and I really don't understand how anti-biotics can stop acne, but Accutane is basically a Vitamin A supplement (a compound which is hard to find in large quantities in dietery foods). So, I'd definitely recommend it, but consult a dermatologist first.

Re: accutane

i wish i jsut save my reply on this for once n all. accutane is nt a mild medicine, use it carefuly. it does help, helped my skin but i stopped the course abt 2 weeks b4 cuz it gave me severe headache= rose my bp. so use it wisely n under observation. it is v.imp.

Re: accutane

headaches, dry skins, etc are the common side-effects. still worth it.

Re: accutane

Yes, it should be taken with prescription. You should get your lipid profile done first too because it can raise triglyceride levels. It can cause dry skin, dry hair, some people can get joint pain but its rare and depression. The side effects are given on the box and the most serious probelm is the teratogenic effects if you concieve while on Accutane so you really have to be on a BCP the whole time you take this drug.
My advise is that if your doctor is suggesting Accutane, don't be hesistant. It's really a miracle drug that has revolutionised treatement of acne. I read this in my dermatology book, not making up my own statements.
