Accounting but horrible at math

I just cannot understand math. maybe I am lazy when it comes to maths don’t know! should i still go for accounting in uni?

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

Yeah, I was the same way. I just didn't want to memorize all those formulas, I guess you could call me lazy. I was excellent in accounting tho (if I may toot my own horn). When we got homework I never did them but when the professor would solve problems the next day I'd be the one answering all the questions.

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

Maybe you should elaborate on the word "math" ... your answer lies there I guess.

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

cricketplaya, honest answer: NO. being good in Math will help immensely in doing well as an Accounting Major.

Unless you can improve.

but in coll, remedial course work might help you to a point, but after that you're on your own.

so please choose your major carefully.

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

i have heard many people who enter accounting that only have basic level maths and doing very well.. i know i am going to need maths as pre-reqs but the question is, does the math that we learn all these years really apply?

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

I am not sure about college accounting courses, but in real life accounting, maths is not really a huge factor. Finance has many mathematical formula but accounting has minimal math. As long as you can do addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, you can probably go through most accounting issues that come up in real life.

Personally I was never super enthusiastic about maths myself. My scores were usually high, but maths was not something I'd enjoy. While pursuing my degree in accounting, I had to literally struggle through advanced math courses, as well as statistics (all those permutations and combinations etc). Fortunately none of these are used much later on.

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

:) thanks man, just what i wanted to hear.

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

I’ve had somewhat of a similar case, it does stress me out once in a while, but I’m glad to hear nothing to be really scared of and we’ve got a good examples to look up to!
:k:

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

i loveee math and i thought i would love accounting too
well i am taking accounting this semester..and theres not much math to it.

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

im taking accounting at college.. and to answer your question if math that we do there will apply in real life is no... except for some of it.. not all of it will be used.

PS: accounting is all about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.. not much math involved in it.. but its really a headache tho....

as my msn nick says these days ' there're so many ways of committing suicide, i chose accounting ' ..

so if ure really interested in it.. and know u can handle it then go for it..or else choose something else.

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

Haha, very phunny!!
I was an accountant for 4 yrs and then changed IT.

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

I did my graduation in Botany, Microbiology and Biochemistry and then I changed my field. I studied at the Institute of Cost & Management Accountants of Pakistan and cleared all accounting, management accounting and others related subjects in frist attempts!

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

I see Mostar bhai, it was a big turn! :)
What had caused the big switch?

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

Due to some changing cricumstances at home and work place then.

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

It just shows how easy is the subject of accounting to study!

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

Its not just accounting, everything is easy when you are interested in the subject and you set your mind to it.

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

Pretty much everyone i know switched from Pre-med/bio to Accounting…

I’m in the second course of the sequence, so far, not much difficult math…just, like everyone said, addition and subtrction. In my school, accounting major also includes economic, finance, and statistics, so for those i’m assuming ull need to know a little bit of math.

Im screwed :hinna:

Re: Accounting but horrible at math

Exactly! But people coming from a science background are doing a lot better in Chartered Accountancy and Management Accoutancy than one coming from a commerce backgound here in Pakistan. And this has been proved ever since Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan took student on the basis of intermediate. As a result a lot Inter Science students joined ICAP and the number of first and within articleship period qualifiers rose sharply in this country.
