Assalam-o-Alikum Guppies and Gappans,
I wanted to know your viewpoints regarding this rather complicated issue. There’s a friend of mine who teaches Quran to people who find the text interesting and are willing to learn more from a scholar(he’s one) and recently he had to hike his fees. He is worried that making profit off of teaching Quran and advising about Hadith and Sunnah for money is haraam. please advise.
There are fatwas from scholars regarding this that if you want to teach someone Quran and do not have enough money to support yourself doing it free then you can add a few more subject(s) when teaching then you can charge your students.
Hmm.. that might be little tricky cuz only things the person can teach are Punjabi and Punjabized Urdu.. Can he work in some grocery stores etc. while teaching Quran if making profits off of teaching Quran is an issue? thanks captain saab!
^ he can sure work in grocery store or any other place for his source of income (as long as it is not illegal i.e. visa restrictions in case he is in US etc.). He can teach Punjabi if the student is willing to learn and pay for it. He might teach Arabic if he knows or any other subject he has expertise of.
Just for my understanding; why a person cannot charge?
Is it religious view or cultural view?
To me the religious teacher also has the same desires, family needs and obligations.
What if the teacher is handicapped and cannot work?
What amazes me is almost all these big scholars in Pakistan are rich.

I guess its the question of ethics- you can't charge money for teaching and spreading something that is everyone's right- and people should get it regardless of their economic status. U r right about religious teachers in Pakistan- they tend to have loads of money, car, everything. I am assuming they get these things in gift.
LB, I’m sorry I didn’t check back this thread and it dropped off on the list. I believe this (below) is one of the verses used to declare it forbidden to take money for teaching Quran:
[2.174] Those who conceal Allah’s revelations in the Book, and purchase for them a miserable profit, they swallow into themselves Naught but Fire; Allah will not address them on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify them: grievous will be their Penalty.
Technically He is teaching so many subjects (without knowing):
1. language i.e. Arabic
2. History
3. Culture
4. Logic
5. Add to the list whatever subject comes under discussion.
