Accepting charity or welfare

What’s your take on this?

I know people who have fallen on hard times and in the past or currently used/using food stamps and collecting welfare benefits, or collect Unemployment benefits…

Now these are people who have worked hard all their lives, paid their taxes to the state etc..their reasoning is that they have given so much in taxes that they are entitled to receive it now that they need it. Now to me that makes sense and I don’t think theres anything wrong with using those to get you through lean times.

In another thread, theres a debate going on about how one should have children without worryign about finances because “Allah will provide.” One of the reasons, is that there will always be zakat or state benefits etc available for hte couple…

I believe that zakat and charity and welfare etc should never be used as options…at least one should work hard and pray that they never be in a position where they have to ask or beg for money.

I do’t know about others but I feel pretty bad asking for money from anyone

If someone is in this situation due to difficult circumstances, thats perfectly fine. I would encourage and appreciate such a person especially if he/she is trying their best to get back into employment.

I don't like asking for money either, not even from my parents, but if I had a family to raise and had no means of income, I would obviously have to ask either the govt. or relatives etc for support.

I know someone here... he's a pakistani dude, has no qualifications, initially worked his way up in a retail store after coming to Ireland, became a manager and then effed up things for himself because of his tharkiness.... he has now been unemployed for like 2 years or so... And I despise his boothi coz he got himself into this situation and is pretty happy staying unemployed... he doesn't bother looking for jobs, hangs around his buddies all day long... the social welfare and child benefit money keeps him and his family going... He was lucky to have bagged the post of a manager despite not even graduating from school in Pakistan, but he just wasn't happy having to work hard! ... no respect for such a person!

Food stamp (ration card?!) is for people who make very low income, and are unable to support their family. Its concept is similar to zakaat kind of thing.

But I don't think unemployment benefits fall in the category of welfare benefits and food stamps.
Unemployment could befall on absolutely anyone, and if the person has been paying off his taxes all his life then it is his right to collect these benefits. I think it is his own money.

Good point
