Accents

Can you understand each and every accent of a foreign language ? e.g people speaking English have various accents like Australian , British, American . People from every part of the world have their own way of speaking English, Chinese, Koreans , Indians speak this language with a localized accent. Now if a non native speaks English , will that adaptation be called an accent or is there any other name for it ?

If a Chinese is speaking English with Chinese adaptation it is extremely hard for me to understand. For example the other day in a conversation a Chinese girl was saying supplises me when she meant to say surprises me. It took me long time to understand what she meant to say.:smack:

Yes , hota hai. Donot worry

Re: Accents

May be she was also feeling the same about your Pakistani accent...lolz

Re: Accents

I am so sir-praised!

Re: Accents

I duno bout accents, i adapt pretty quickly.

But I have fun with goras and their pronounciation of desi (esp indian) names.

We have an indian guy in our team, the poor bloke’s namei s Viral.

Everybody somehow manages to pronounce it as such that it sounds like Feral :chai:

We have all the sounds of English language in Urdu , we do not mispronounce any sound, yes we do have a desi accent but saying supplises to surprises , or calling file to fire is misleading.
Think about it if someone calls the fire station in the area and start yelling file , file , they will hang up instead of rushing to help.

Re: Accents

^ :hehe:

Most Desis don't know the difference between V and W so it's not right to say that they pronounce every sound correctly.
But yeah it is even harder for Japanese to make sound of R.

lol check this out:

Re: Accents

^lol....some English people pronounce thinking as finking and thunder as funder.

I've noticed that whichever style of speaking is odd for a person, that individual will refer to it as an "accent", but he will consider the accent which he has been brought up with as "just neutral".

Btw, try decrypting the Scottish and Jamaican accents...
But do keep a strip of Aspirin around :biggthumb

Re: Accents

^ i think this is british accent they pronounce T like F thank you as fankyou n think as fink

There are so many different accents within Britain, I thing in East London they use f instead of th.

Re: Accents

Mirch pay due attention to ppl , you won't have that problem any more.
I mean take interest in people!!

I have heard things like all chines look alike or black look alike.
I use to work on a store and that never happened to me. Neither I had trouble understanding what some one was saying. It was high traffic place but still If I looked at some one (when I was not too busy), I always remembered distinct things about them.

You are a true student of Dale Carnegie. I have heard all kind of accents. I used to work on a very popular tourist beach in CA on drive through window of a burger joint.
I am very much against stereotyping . This thread is not about stereotyping. It is asking people how many accents they can understand.

Re: Accents

(Mirch I am just sharing relevant feeling about the topic. I know enough. I know you will never do stereotyping.)

You why voice recognition is so difficult for computer? they can't put things in perspective while humans can.
I had fight with my arrogant friends over the issue.
Once we went to buy pizza, a Vietnamese person was working he asked if my friend want a "cheeeo slice"
My friend goes "WHAT"
I was so pissed at how my friend acted.
1-I mean you are in pizza shop.
2-there 3 kind of slices peperoni, veg and cheese.
3-A person with thick accent asks cheee slice
I mean let your brain do little math. Answer would be a cheese slice.

ahahahahahhahahahahahahhas

well depends what you mean by mispronounce
for desis .v and w are mixed up
teh d sound is very differrent then a daal sound
the 'th' sound is also done differently
