Abusing Pakistan's Laws on religion - loopholes

An interesting story on minorities taking advantage of religious laws. Reading between the lines, it seems that two Christian boys wanted to elope with their underage girlfriends in 2011, in a way that would stop the girls parents from getting them back.

So the boys and girls ran away, converted to Islam, then got married. When the girls parents filed a kidnapping case, the boys claimed that as an Islamic marriage was carried out, there was no kidnapping.

The court was unwilling to send the now-Muslim girls back to their Christian parents, so the kidnapping charge was quashed.

When one of the girls was abandoned by her husband later, she chose to go to a woman’s shelter rather than return to her parents, despite being legally a minor.

A couple of months later, she’s agreed to return to her parents as she had a bad experience in the woman’s shelter, but the court has said that her family is not allowed to force her to convert back to Christianity.
