Abrogation in Islam

Abrogation of a Recitation of a Qur’aanic Verse and its legal ruling together

In this case, the recitation of the Verse is abrogated and so is the legal ruling. It is not recited. It is not present in the Qur’aan and its ruling is no longer applicable.

Example:

'A’isha (Allah be pleased with, her) reported that it had been revealed in the Holy Qur’an that ten clear sucklings make the marriage unlawful, then it was abrogated (and substituted) by five sucklings and Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) died and it was before that time (found) in the Holy Qur’an (and recited by the Muslims).

[Sahih Muslim Hadith No. 1452]

Abrogation of the legal ruling but the recitation remains in the Qur’aan

In this case the ruling of the Verse is abrogated but the recitation remains. The Verse is till present in the Qur’aan and recited.

Example
**
O Prophet, urge the believers to battle. If there are among you twenty [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand.**

[Qur’aan 8:65]

The above Verse is still in the Qur’aan but its ruling has been abrogated by the following Qur’aanic Verse

Now, Allah has lightened [the hardship] for you, and He knows that among you is weakness. So if there are from you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you a thousand, they will overcome two thousand by permission of Allah . And Allah is with the steadfast.

[Qur’aan 8:66]

Recitation of the Verse has been abrogated but its legal ruling persists.

In this case the recitation of the Qur’aanic Verse has been abrogated and cannot be found in the Qur’aan but its legal ruling persists.

Example

The Hadith of 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) presented in the first example is evidence for this.

The example of Rajm (stoning the Zaani who is married) is also of this type. The ruling persists but the recitation of the particular Verse was abrogated and is not found in the Mushaf.
