TAWHEED - ITS IMPORTANCE IN THE QUR’AAN:
Ibn Abil-'Izz - rahimahullaah - said, “So the Qur’aan - all of it - is about
Tawheed, its rights and its rewards; and about Shirk, its people and their
punishments. Thus, “All praise belongs to Allâh, Lord of the worlds.” [19]
is Tawheed (of knowledge). “The Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.” is Tawheed (of knowledge). “The Master of the Day of Judgement.” is also Tawheed (of knowledge). “You alone do we worship and You alone do we seek aid and assistance from.” is Tawheed (of action). “Guide us to the Straight Path.” concerns Tawheed and asking for guidance to the path of the people of Tawheed, (which is), “The Path of those whom You have favoured. Not of those who have earned Your anger, nor of those who have gone astray.” those who have separated themselves from Tawheed.” [20] So Allaah begins this Soorah by first informing us about Himself - the Most Perfect (i.e. Tawheed of knowledge). Then after having knowledge of Allaah - the Most High - Allaah orders us with the Tawheed of action, “You alone do we worship.”
Likewise just as, “the great Qur’aan opens with Tawheed it also ends with
it. So the Qur’aan opens with Sooratul-Faatihah, “All praise belongs to
Allâh, Lord of the worlds.” and the great Qur’aan ends with the Soorah,
“Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind.” [21]” [22]
Likewise, the greatest aayah in the Qur’aan is Aayatul-Kursee. [23] Since this great aayah informs us - from start to finish - purely about Allah’s Names, His Attributes and His Actions. So this further emphasizes the importance of the Tawheed of knowledge.
Similarly, Sooratul-Ikhlaas - from start to finish - is concerned with the
Tawheed of knowledge, whilst Sooratul-Kaafiroon is connected with the
Tawheed of action. Indeed, the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said about a man who was reciting al-Kaafiroon in the first rak’ah, “This is a servant who believes in his Lord.” Then the man recited al-Ikhlaas in the second, so he (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, “This is a servant who knows his Lord.” [25] The Prophet sallallâhu 'alayhi wa sallam said, “Say: He is Allaah, the One.” is equivalent to one third of the Qur’aan. And “Say: O disbelievers…” is equivalent to a quarter of the Qur’aan. [26] What further demonstrates the importance of this Tawheed is the fact that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), “would begin his day with Tawheed (of knowledge and action), since he recited both Sooratul-Kaafiroon and Sooratul-Ikhlaas in the two rak’aat before Fajr (dawn prayer). [27] And he would end the night by reciting both of these Soorahs in his witr prayer.
[28]” [29]
“Indeed, .” [30] And Allaah - the Mighty and Majestic - says, “A book We have sent down, full of blessings, that men may ponder over its messages; and those who possess understanding may take
them to heart.” [31]
Soorat al-Baqarah, Aal ‘Imraan and Ta-Ha.” Hishaam, i.e., Ibn ‘Ammaar, the khateeb of Damascus, said: “In al-Baqarah, it is ‘Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exist’ [al-Baraqah 2:255 – interpretation of the meaning]. In Aal ‘Imraan it is ‘Alif-Laam-Meem. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur’aan, and none but Allaah (Alone) knows their meanings.] Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyoom (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists)’ [Aal ‘Imraan3:1-2 – interpretation of the meaning]. And in Ta-Ha it is ‘And (all) faces shall be humbled before (Allaah), Al-Hayyul-Qayyoom (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists)’ [Ta-Ha 20:111
About Adhkars:
Aa’ishah reported that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went to bed, he would cup his hands together, blow into them and recite into them Qul huwa Allaahu ahad [Soorat al-Ikhlaas], Qul a’oodhu bi Rabbi’l-falaq [Soorat al-Falaq] and Qul a’oodhu bi Rabbi’l-naas [Soorat al-Naas] (these are the last 3 soorahs of the Qur’aan – Translator). Then he would wipe as much of his body as he could with his hands, starting with his head and face, and the front of his body. He would do this three times. (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 4630)
Praise be to Allaah.
Some saheeh reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) describe du’aa’s that can be recited one hundred times during the day and night, such as that reported by Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Whoever says ‘Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in Qadeer (There is no god but Allaah Alone, with no partner or associate; His is the Dominion and His is the Praise, and He is Able to do all things), one hundred times in a day, it will be equivalent (in reward) to freeing ten slaves, and a hundred hasanaat (good deeds) will be recorded for him, and one hundred sayi’aat (bad deeds) will be erased from his record; it will be a protection for him from the Shaytaan all that day until evening comes, and nobody can do any better than that except one who does more than that.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 3050).
Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) also reported that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever says ‘Subhaan Allaah wa bi hamdih (Glory and praise be to Allaah)’ one hundred times in a day, his sins will be wiped out even if they are like the foam of the sea.’” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 5936).
