‘Miss Bikini’ did not represent Pakistan, says official

ISLAMABAD, Sept 7: Authorities are investigating how a Pakistani-born American woman entered a ‘Miss Bikini’ pageant in China as a representative of the country. Houston-based Mariyah Moten, 22, took part in the pageant in the Chinese resort of Beihai on Aug 28.

She won a “Best in Media” title, for being the most photographed and interviewed contestant, according to media reports.

A government official said Ms Moten did not have permission to represent Pakistan.

“We have asked our missions in Washington and Beijing to investigate this because it is against our policy, culture and religion,” senior Culture Ministry official Abdul Hafeez Chaudhry said on Thursday, referring to Ms Moten’s participation.

“She is an American passport holder. She is an American national of Pakistani origin, so how did she get entry as a Pakistani?” he asked.

Ms Moten, a student of hotel management at the University of Houston, was born and brought up in Karachi, news reports said. She moved to the US with her family eight years ago.

Mr Chaudhry said Pakistan might take the issue up with China, depending on the result of the investigation.

He also said the government might withdraw from Ms Moten special privileges offered to people of Pakistani descent such as visa-free travel to the country.—Reuters

Re: About Miss Bikini

lol.... like she is gonna lose sleep over not getting a Visa to Pakistan

Re: About Miss Bikini

How Pak government manages to impose itself in trivial issues is mind-boggling. If you think about it, even run-of-the-mill contestants of beauty paegents do not obtain government persmission for participating. Do you think Miss California gets approval from the government to participate in Miss USA? Private organizations organize these shows at local levels and winners move up the competition chain. No one asks for a written NOC from the state or local government.

Question remains, what is the credential of this lady to represent Pakistan. This is more a question for the organizers of this Miss Bikini or whatever competition it was. Can someone just come up from whereever and claim to be representing XYZ? Reputed competitions require some local event from where a winner moves up. It seems like this Chinese event was more a PR event than anything worthwhile. For Pak government to suddenly wake up and demand an explanation is just a big waste of time.

Re: About Miss Bikini

So the Pakistan govt makes an issue over this but did not utter a single word when Lebanon was invaded...

Shabaash Pak Govt!

Re: About Miss Bikini

isn't this ironic mercenary? claiming to represent Pakistan and not caring about her Pakistani nationality. incidentally her first formal interview is in India - a country where Sania Mirza's claim to fame is more in her short skirts than her sporting abilities.

like OBL's niece, this woman wanted publicity, and perhaps the only route available to the poor girl was using her connections to the land and religion which generally disapprove of the practice she was indulging in. that's why she was the most interviewed and photographed woman. and people like us would keep her in the news indefinitely.

Pakistani officials should grow up and stop overreacting to such trivial issues.. a simple statement that she wasn't officially representing Pakistan would've been enough. It's not the business of the government to tell people what they should wear, and what kind of pageants they can participate in.

She can do whatever she wants to do, but unfortunately she's not representing Pakistan. but as I said this 'controversy' was all she needed to become famous overnight. good luck miss ..whatever your name is

Re: About Miss Bikini

i am just waiting for the fatwa against her by our esteem religious establishment who are more concerned about a girl in a bikini than terrorists using pakistan and islam to kill innocent people and malign Islam

Re: About Miss Bikini

How dare she!
Ony the military dictators, jihadis and bearded mullahs have the god-given right to represent Pak…

Re: About Miss Bikini

I saw a pic of her...and she ain't even good looking. No wonder she has chosen to go as Miss Pakistan...as no one else from Pakistan even wants to be in the competition. She would not get in as Miss U.S.A based on looks.

Re: About Miss Bikini

Pakistan condemned the invasions and the bombing from the very beginning and urged an immediate ceasefire. In fact, Lebanon’s ambassador to Pakistan lauded Pakistan’s vocal and principled support for Lebanon through the war.

Re: About Miss Bikini

Pak did not condemn Lebanon? you lot on here are not very bright & a severe embarassment.

So when the government does not say anything on the issue of Miss Bikini, you guys complain, and when they do say something, you guys also complain.

Re: About Miss Bikini

I won;t merge this thread with the previous one since this is more about Pakistan governments stance on the issue.

Re: About Miss Bikini

i dont get it. u can have mujras in pakistan and punjabi actresses shaking what their momma gave 'em in punjabi movies and mujras, part-time whores like reema, meera, resham, jana malik singing milli nagmas on independence day. reema acting like she is the epitome of sharafat on TV.
but oh no a pakistani girl happens to wear a bikini and enter an international contest and oh mah lord! how dare she say she is a pakistani!
is it just because what happens in pakistan stays in pakistan and the girl is representing pakistan internationally and it spoils the image of an islamic republic?
isnt it funny how the beauty pageant contestant suffers the same put-down like the woman that was gang-raped (M Mai). both were in fact "bad-naming" pakistan. it seems like it has less to do with morals and more to do with a stupid phony image desis like to paint of Pakistan by closing their eyes to the stuff that goes on in there.

Re: About Miss Bikini

visa-free travel to the country?? that would mean traveling to pak without visa..i think

Re: About Miss Bikini

Pakistanis love to make issues of non-issues to show how islamic they are and how they are defending Islam and this is a perfect case in point

Re: About Miss Bikini

How confidently the Pakistani government jumps on the wagon of ban this girl because she is not representing our culture. When there are honor killings, sectarian violence and corruption rampant all over the country and have become part of our culture and lifestyle. We after all got all of our priorities twisted.

Re: About Miss Bikini

miss bikini is UGLYYYYYYYYYYYY

Re: About Miss Bikini

since we've already discussed the twisted priorities of Pak government, we also need to look at the priorities of the media which is giving her so much attention. what she's essentially doing is selling her image as an 'almost-naked-Paki-Muslim-girl', and fluanting her Pak connection in india which finally elicited a reaction from some pak official. this was bound to catch the attention of the media for a number of reasons including but not limited to the following,

1- it satisfies the desire of many to see muslim women 'showing some skin' and 'coming out of purda'.

2- her acts show that she's not gonna be threat to their 'freedom'.

there's also a political dimension to this issue. some people show greater zeal in 'emancipating' Pak woman than apprehending those officials who were involved in some underage sex scandal, or the policemen who rape women on trians.

good luck Mariya!

Re: About Miss Bikini

Actually, you got your facts wrong again. Honour killings are illegal, sectarian violence is illegal, corruption is in fact illegal. They comdemn it all.

Re: About Miss Bikini

What a stupid move....by Pakistan ....
Basically in order to get Visa for Pakistan ... one has to dress a certain way...
WOW so much for the free land we got... we absolutely no freedom! Thank u Mullas

Re: About Miss Bikini

The priorities arent twisted. 100% implementation of any law is impossible.

Right, policemen raping women on "trians" is so common place. I suspect also people calling themselves Amorphous do much the same, as I know one Amorphous that did.
