- As far as I know it usually starts in late May.
- Yes. You will need to get a visa from the Chinese embassy. It’s quite easy usually.
- First, you will need to go to Gilgit, and then to Sust. It’s the last town before the border on the Pakistani side and that’s where the Pakistani “official border” crossing is situated; including the customs and immigration. At Sust, you have to leave your vehicle and board a bus which will take you across into China. The bus will go through the Khunjerab pass which lies at the altitude of 16002 ft. It’s about 4-5 hrs long drive from Sust. Khunjerab is the actual border between Pakistan and China. The bus will take you all the way down to the Chinese customs and immigration post, where your documents will be processed, and you are able to carry-on. It’s better to rent some 4*4 to drive you to Kashi as the buses could be unreliable. Considering the fact that it’s been close to 20 years, since I went there I am sure a lot must have improved by now in terms of infrastructure and transportation.
- I don’t.
- The visa is valid for traveling throughout China, I don’t believe you need an invitation letter.

- I don’t.

- Contact the Chinese embassy in ISB. Also, the PTDC and NATCO (Northern Areas Transport Company).
