Salam-Hope everyone’s rosay are going well. I’m sure this topic has been brought about many times, however, i have a reason for asking this question. I am taking a class on novels from the Arab world. I really hope people don’t think this is what all muslim ppl are like based on the works of Naghib Mahfouz, Hanan Al-Shaykh, as well as others. Anyways, in the last novel we read the lebanese-“The Story of Zahra” Her various affairs lead to a number of pregnancies and in turn abortions. Her whore of a mother had also aborted 2 babies. Well for Zahra’s first 2 pregnancies, its only a couple months in, and the doctor aborts it. For her third preganancy, she is 4-5 months along, and the doctor straight out refuses saying it is illegal now that’s she’s that far along-she tries a number of ways to get him to do it, but he’s adamant abt its illegality. So in class comes the question of abortion in the Islamic world. I always thought that once you are pregnant, regardless of far you are, it is forbidden to abort the child unless its harmful to the mother in such. The teacher (who i’m not sure is muslim or not, i don’t think so) says something abt there being various hadiths on the matter, and that it is permitted as long as the child hasn’t “quickened.” Well she didn’t know what that meant, and neither do I. So in the end, my question is, what are Islam’s views on abortion then? I would really appreciate your guys’s help on this.
