KARACHI: Sialkot Stallions took a giant leap towards the semifinals stage, when they defeated Karachi Zebras quite comprehensively by an 83 runs margin, in a Group A ABN-AMRO Twenty20 Cup National Cricket Championship match, here at the National Stadium under lights on Tuesday.
Thanks to a brilliant all-round performance by their Pakistan player Shoaib Malik, who hit a blistering 78 and then bagged three wickets with his off-breaks, the Stallions piled up a big total of 217-8 and then had the Zebras crashing to 134 all out.
Already perched on top of the Group A points table, the Sialkot team have now won all their four matches and earned the full eight points. Most probably, the final run for the last-four stage over Wednesday (today) and Thursday will be between them and last season’s winners Faisalabad Wolves.
Shoaib required a mere 37 deliveries to hammer his 78 runs that included nine fours and three sixes. After having elected to bat, skipper Imran Nazir made 38 off 25 balls with six fours and a six while Shoaib did the rest.
In the later stages of the innings, Pakistan pace bowler Rana Naved-ul-Hasan took just 13 balls to score an unbeaten 33, that included six fours and a six. Leg-spinner Danish Kaneria took four wickets for 31 runs. Apart from Naumanullah, who hit 36 runs off 22 balls with seven boundaries, and Wasim Naeem, whose 27 came off 18 balls, the Karachi batsmen were first undone by the pace bowlers Mohammad Asif (2-36) and Sarfraz Ahmed (3-31). Shoaib polished off the lower order.
