Inzamam-ul-Haq to lead Multan Tigers in Twenty20 Cup

By Gul Hameed Bhatti

KARACHI: Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has been named to lead the Multan Tigers side in the 2005-06 season’s ABN-AMRO Twenty20 Cup Cricket Championship, which begins at various grounds here in Karachi from Friday, February 24.

Inzamam didn’t represent his home region in the inaugural competition played last season, when the Multan Tigers had finished fourth and last in Pool A of the event. This time round, almost every available international representative Pakistani cricketer is being expected to make an appearance in the Twenty20 Cup Championship.

However, while the currently injured and unfit Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul remain unavailable at the moment, they have been included in the squads named by their respective regions.

In case these three can get into action over the nine days that the competition will be held, Shoaib Akhtar will play for Islamabad Leopards, Shahid Afridi for Karach Zebras and Umar Gul for Peshawar Panthers.

There are 13 teams instead of the 11 that appeared in the last season’s tournament. The new inductees are the Abbottabad and Islamabad regions, given the ‘zoological’ titles of Rhinos and Leopards, respecively. Karachi and Lahore, of course, continue to field two outfits each.

Faisalabad Wolves had clinched the first national Twenty20 Cup title last season, also sponsored by the ABN-AMRO Bank, who have now taken over the financial support of all domestic cricket in Pakistan.

The 2004-05 final was a highly exciting affair. Faisalabad Wolves eventually defeated Karachi Dolphins by a two-wicket margin, with only one delivery in their allotted 20 overs remaining.

Apart from Inzamam-ul-Haq, the Multan Tigers team also boasts the presence of Pakistan fast bowler Shabbir Ahmed, who is unfortunately undergoing a one-year ban imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a suspect bowling action.

The other international players are distributed in the remaining teams as follows: Islamabad Leopards — Shoaib Akhtar, Bazid Khan and Rao Iftikhar.

Sialkot Stallions — Imran Nazir (captain), Shoaib Malik, Qaiser Abbas, Mohammad Asif and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan.

Lahore Lions — Junaid Zia (captain), Imran Farhat, Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Khalil and Humayun Farhat (among the reserves).

Lahore Eagles — Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq, Taufeeq Umar and Irfan Fazil (among the reserves).

Rawalpindi Rams — Mohammad Wasim, Naved Ashraf (captain) and Yasir Arafat (vice-captain).

Karachi Dolphins — Faisal Iqbal, Asim Kamal, Moin Khan and Mohammad Sami.

Karachi Zebras — Shahid Afridi, Hasan Raza, Farhan Adil, Danish Kaneria and Ghulam Ali (among the reserves).

Faisalabad Wolves — Misbah-ul-Haq (captain), Mohammad Hafeez (vice-captain), Naved Latif and Shahid Nazir.

Peshawar Panthers — Yasir Hameed, Younis Khan (captain), Wajahatullah Wasti, Akhtar Sarfraz, Arshad Khan, Umar Gul, Fazl-e-Akbar and Riaz Afridi.

Abbottabad Rhinos — Ali Naqvi. Hyderabad Hawks — Faisal Athar (captain) and Kashif Raza. Quetta Bears have no Pakistan players in their midst.

The ABN-AMRO Bank have set aside US$50,000 as prize money for the forthcoming tournament. The winners will be richer by Rs 600,000 at the end of the final, due to be played here at the National Stadium on March 4.
