It seems that Urdu font keyboard is quite popular on social media. My Facebook newsfeed is always full of jokes, poetry, commentaries, quotes, memes and more, that are written in Urdu.
What saddens me is when I see poor quality of written Urdu. I can understand typos, but it amazes me to see the spelling mistakes when writing commonly spoken words.
I blame our t.v.culture for that. Back in the days, we used to read books for tafreeh e tabaa. Do kids read urdu books anymore in Pakistan?
Re: Ability to write Urdu and our young generation
Bro, I don't even know how to read/write it -- let alone typos.
I'm so sad about that.
Meanwhile, my phupo's daughter who were born/raised in the USA were forced to do matric in urdu.
They can read/write and they swear it was a torturous process and an absolutely useless skill.
The youngest daughter did her PhD in Mughal History of the South Asian subcontinent, so she spent about 3 years in Pakistan doing research. Even she is like I didn't speak a lick of urdu while in Pakistan. ( I think she stayed in Multan and Lahore).
Re: Ability to write Urdu and our young generation
Sister, I was only referring to the people growing up in Pakistan, especially the educated crowd. For people like you who grew up in west, Urdu knowledge is a good skill to have, but not necessary.

@the_kaur good. I like Raj comics. Chacha chowdhari, bankelal, nagraj, super commando dhruv, bhokal etc are good. I love hasya samrat Bankelal btw happy Makar samkranti
I see all the time beautifully designed/written quotes, poetry on the Facebook with full of spelling mistakes. Mostly people get confuse with the sound of zal, zay, zuad, zoye but it is shame when someone whose first language is Urdu commit these kind of mistakes. Aur sub say baRi baat paRhnay ka maza kirkira ho jata.

Re: Ability to write Urdu and our young generation
I have this skill under my belt.
My parents made me and my sister learn to read and write on the weekends at a Sunday school.
No faidah career wise whatsoever, other than I can speak to my ILS since none of their kids (including my hubby) speak any Urdu, so they love that about me.
But when I’m out and about I don’t even look that Pakistani, so when I start speaking, people are like hein??? So I get a kick out of myself in my perfect talafhuhiz
But I have kept up with it, I don’t want to abandon it, I mean I learned it, it is part of my heritage, I’m sad that my kids may not ever know it like I do; but I have it with me so I’m gonna keep it, I still buy Urdu material to keep myself brushed up.
As goes for FB meme grammatical errors I just fix it my head, no biggie
Oh and why is this happening to kids residing in Pakistan? Well they are too busy trying to fit in Pakistan by being westernized cool kids?
Re: Ability to write Urdu and our young generation
Mom taught me to read and write urdu when I was a kid; she used the textbooks used in school. But over the years, my writing has...i admit....become very rusty. But MashaAllah se spoken Urdu has become better over the years. I actually find it to be more sad that the young generation can't speak even basic Urdu properly....on top of that some youth find it embarrassing to do so
