My parents were too strict in this regard. We live in the Netherlands. My brother was never happy whenever my parents pushed him to marry this or that cousin living in Britain or Pakistan. I understand him. I never liked that idea either. Eventually he met a lovely Chinese lady. They married and afterwards he told my parents. It was difficult for them to accept this marriage, but it helps that she is Muslim en by now they have accepted her.
I don't understand why for many Desi parents only Desi life partners are acceptable as a marriage partner. And waht if someone isn't a believer anymore, why should that person still have to marry a Muslim?
Personally, I wouldn't have minded to marry a Muslim who isn't Desi. As a male, my brother could do this and still get away with that. I'm glad someone in our family did, it's time for a change and a more open life in our family. Hoping that his marriage will bring that in our family.
