Aaqib Javed, the former Pakistan fast-medium bowler, has been appointed chief coach of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced.

A PCB spokesman said that Aaqib’s appointment as the head of coaching at Lahore’s NCA would be highly beneficial for the young players training at the academy. “Aaqib brings to this position vast experience as an international cricketer and as a professional coach,” said the spokesman.

Aaqib, 34, played the last of his 22 Tests in 1998, having taken 54 wickets. He was an under-recognised part of a much-feared Pakistan pace attack of the 90s, overshadowed mostly by Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. He did however forge a more successful one-day career, taking 182 wickets from 163 matches.

He was part of Pakistan’s triumphant 1992 World Cup squad and once held the record for the best bowling figures in an ODI - 7 for 37, including a hat-trick - which he achieved against India in Sharjah in 1991.

Aaqib has stayed attached with international cricket since his exit nine years ago and has attended several coaching courses and workshops in recent years. He completed a PCB Level-2 Coaching Course (2003) and has participated in Asian Cricket Council (ACC) High Performance Course (2004). He has also attended the Cricket Australia/ACC Cricket Skills course for fast bowling and batting, held in Bangkok (2004-05).

Aaqib has successfully completed assignments as fast bowling coach at the Lahore Regional Academy at Sheikhupura (2001), head coach of Lahore Region at Muridke (2002) and fast bowling coach at NCA (2004-05).

His stint as fast bowling coach was widely acknowledged as a successful one, having worked with and improved several young fast bowlers, including Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul, Mohammad Khalil, Mohammad Irshad and Samiullah Niazi.

Aaqib has also coached several national age-group teams and under him Pakistan won the Under-15 Asian Championship in 2002 and the Under-19 World Cup in 2004. He also had a successful coaching stint with the Pakistan ‘A’ squad.

a very sensible move by PCB

Re: Aaqib Javed appointed head coach at NCA

Yes he’s

An under-rated fast-medium bowler who mastered traditional and reverse-swing. He had a sprinting run-up which culminated in a high action, allied to a hostile attitude towards batsmen. Aqib Javed was allegedly only 16 when he made his Test debut in 1988-89, but he spent much of his career in the shadows of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, despite playing a key part in Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup victory when he opened the bowling effectively in place of the injured Waqar. The subsequent tour of England was eventful too. Aqib was involved in a notorious sweater-tugging incident with umpire Roy Palmer after he had gratuitously pitched short at England’s No. 11 Devon Malcolm. Aqib was in and out of the side too much for his liking, and made more of an impact as a one-day player. His career ended amid the acrimony of Pakistan’s match-fixing controversy, in which he was seen as one of the clean players.

AOA WRWB

I used to think during the days when both Aqib and I were young that (;)) he was pretty ordinary. but then he started surprising me and others with his slow ones that pitched on off and middle, getting rid of many good willowswingers.
But I have a doubt as how he will benefit as head coach. I mean how much does he know about batting and fielding?
If he is the head coach then will there be other batting and fielding coaches?

Sorry for dumb questions...

Re: Aaqib Javed appointed head coach at NCA

^ His slow ball was one of the best I have seen from a fast or medium pacer. Specially the one against Kiwi's in 92 WC which clean bowled Greatbatch. The ball hitting the bails and flying all over. He (Greatbatch) looked dangrous and it was a timely wicket.

I am sure you know there no such things as dumb question(s)

As for how much he knows about batting, since he is a bowler, I 'd say alot, whole lot, coz he was a smart and skillful bowler, who knew how to trap a batsman. Hence a swift calculation of the opposing number weakness and what type of wicket is in play and making full use of it.

As for fielding he was a great catcher and gave his 100%; doing the basic fielding right! Plus having the experience and courses from ACB and other level courses which kept him in touch with modern techniques, and the question should be how can he transfer his knowledge and experience to the young guns. and if you look at the U-19 coaching he did in the past U-19WC's squads I think he did well!

I think if the current team do the basic fielding 99% right I believe they will drasticly improve the level of fielding.

Re: Aaqib Javed appointed head coach at NCA

Aaqib is one of the very few coaches who actually went through the pains of coaching certifications and courses and has already given good results. I hope that he is given reins after woolmer's departure (at least I hope so)

Re: Aaqib Javed appointed head coach at NCA

^ I agree…he’s probably one of the most qualified coaches we have in Pakistan. Good luck to Aaqib :k:

PCB gave the following new years gift to Inzimam:

Pakistan board's U-turn
Mushtaq reappointed as assistant coach

December 31, 2006

Less than three months after sacking him, Nasim Ashraf, chairman of the Pakistan board, has reappointed Mushtaq Ahmed, the former Pakistan legspinner, as assistant coach for the tour to South Africa, set to begin from January 2.

Mushtaq had been removed from the post hours before the Pakistan team left for the Champions Trophy in October, one of Ashraf's first moves upon taking over the chairmanship of the board. At the time, he was deemed as "irrelevant staff" by Ashraf, though speculation centred around a combination of his close friendship with Inzamam-ul-Haq and his implication in Justice Qayyum's report on match-fixing.

But at a press conference in Lahore, Ashraf said Mushtaq was capable of serving the team. "Mushtaq has impressed me a lot with his cricketing knowledge and I think he can be a better choice for the South African tour," he said. Mushtaq is expected to remain with the team through the whole tour, while Waqar Younis, the bowling coach, will return home after the Tests.

Aaqib has earned his position as the head coach, whereas the new born Maulvi Mushtaq continues to find favor because of cronyism.
