the problem seems to be all on the guy's side, he knew u did not liek him but probably forced his mother to go talk to your mother, as if they will force u in a marriage you dont want.
His mother probably wants him to marry soemone else to begin with, but came over #1- to show him that she tried #2- to push you away just in case you were a teeny bit interested, thus be insulting you she wanted to
Next step, she will got o her son, "haan biata, I went myself but those ppl are not good/blatantly said no/ girl is already engaged" etc etc and then go for the kill" baita, let me find a larki for you" and maye even "what about so and so"
she looks good to him, he thinsk she tried, she gets rid of this whole nakhra and moves him in a diff direction.
thats the pakistani drama version.

there's something wrong in him . the way it was in his mother .. he seems to me to be a drama kind person. not someone sensible .
when i jioned the uni . he told all the uni himself that i was engaged . even though i wasn't .. then i askedhim why did he do so .he said. he saw a ring on my hand .
.. buss he kept doing dramas .. all the time ..
