why… people want to know where you are from?

it was a polite way of breaking the ice when Shareef Shuroofa people met not very long ago, and it was not cosidered RUDE or anything
we tend to look at it based on present day's criteria when "Yoooooooo" and "Whazzzuppppp jiggaaaaa" are perfectly polite greetings

in poorbi zaban the word laRkay was used to define the offsprings, regardless of the sex. So if someone told you that "Mairay teen laRkay hain", it could mean boys OR girls

yeah, its pure curiosity... i find nothing offensive/ annoying about it... as long as ppl ask it in the right tone... at times i get "if you dont mind my asking; what is your background?"... however at other times... ppl try to guess the country i am from and they start with Lebanon/ Iran/ Egypt and continue to count all the countries in the middle east until i tell 'em i'm from pakistan.
