I know that in office enviornment, calling a girl 'hey pretty lady' is no longer a compliment. It is considered a mild form of sexual harrassment.

I personaly think that to praise a person of opposite gender (of their physical aspect) one needs to have certain degree of relationship with that person.
Like 2 adults should be romanticaly involved (H/W., Fiance or even GF) for guy to say that to the girl.

yeah..i feel weird when guys say that.. unless i know them. but smart guyz dont compliment u 2 ur face. it does seem sort of cheap even if hte girl is pretty bcs its saying that im just focusing on u as an object of my lustful desires.
but when women do it, its ok.
but even if men dont compliment u but they keep oggling u then that is just as uncomfortable as if htey comliment u.. sorry that was me brainsotrming! :)

I so agree with soni, smart guys do not compliment you in person. I personally do not like a random person complimenting me. It indicates to the recipient that the other person is a flirt.

This is what I did once in front of girls common room in my engineering univ. in karachi.
i sat there with a friend of mine, and whenever I saw a homely looking girl, I said to my freind, Yaar tum to keh rahay thay kay N.E.D. main koi achchi shakal ki larki nahi hai' :D
that was my stupid way of passing compliment to grils who probably never gotten that comment cause they were really not a beauty queen to begin with
