Aamir replaced as chief selector by Bari

**Wasim Bari returns as chief selector **](http://uk.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2004/JAN/052228_PAK_22JAN2004.html)

Wasim Bari, the former Test captain, has replaced Aamer Sohail as Pakistan’s chairman of selectors. It is Bari’s second stint in the job after he was sacked in July 2001. Iqbal Qasim, Sultan Rana and Ehtshamuddin make up the rest of the panel.

The four-strong team have been asked by Shaharyar Khan, chairman of the board, to get to work immediately. Iqbal, who is also in charge of the junior selection committee, will act as a link between the senior and junior parties.

Khan wrote to Sohail, who held the position since March 2003, saying that he appreciated his contribution, which helped Pakistan’s improvement after their dismal 2003 World Cup, and added that he would like to call on Sohail’s services some time in the future.

Why Wasim Bari?. I am glad Aamir is out but the replacement is not so great. This guy is a proven failure when it comes to selection.

Does it have to be a former cricketer?

What were the other choices? Why can't we appoint a foreign selector?

and the circus goes on. :-)

P.S: Am not an Amir Sohail fan anyways, just thought i'll make myself clear.

Wasim Bari was the selector during the world cup and was sacked because of the debacle which followed. So what has he done in the meantime to have merited a recall? :konfused:

The rest of the selection committee is hardly something to shout about.

Nawaz Sharif goes, Benazir comes, Benazir goes Nawaz Sharif goes.... its same circus everywhere.

The four memeber strong committee consists of ex-players from the 80's. None of the current team members are from that era. So it might well work this time around. I just didn't like Amir who played with most of the current squad in this position.

:hula: :hula: bari is not a bad selector, he chose an excellent team for WC its the teams fault they lost the WC

Also read the following:

"The committee had been accused of nepotism over the selection of the Pakistan Under-17 team currently touring India, which includes the son of one of the selectors."

Anyone knows which selector?

^^ Farrukh Zaman's son Fahad zaman or babar zamaan.

Though i wanted Sohail to be removed but to replace him with Bari is a bad decision IMO. They should have opted for someone from the newer generation like Saeed Anwar or Wasim, not as stupid or head-strong as Aamir but someone with know-how of modern cricket.

thats the end of aamer:k:
phew!

you guys can never be satisfied. You don’t want Aamir, you don’t want Bari…:smack:

I think it's Wasim's Bari now.

He deserves it. He is the highest wicket-taker, no?

to add to that, he has played cricket in last two decades? And My God does he has the knowledge of modern cricket or what!

I would've preffered someone other than Bari. Sharayar Khan's decisions are becoming suspicious by the day.

saihee…the team was probably the best team in the tournament on paper… they underachieved

exactly, phew!

PCB sacks Aamir Sohail

January 22, 2004 22:22 IST

National selection committee chairman Aamir Sohail was sacked on Thursday by the Pakistan Cricket Board and replaced by another former cricketer, Wasim Bari, even as the country gears up to host eternal rivals India in March.

A PCB statement said former Test captain Wasim Bari has been appointed chairman of the selection committee.

Iqbal Qasim, Sultan Rana and Ehtshamuddin were named as new members of the panel, which has been asked to take on its responsibilities immediately.

Iqbal Qasim, who is convener of the Junior Selection Committee, will act as a link between the senior and junior committees, the statement added.

The announcement coincided with the arrival of the national cricket team from New Zealand, where it enjoyed mixed success, winning the Test series 1-0 and losing the one-day series 4-1

Bari had quit as chief selector after Pakistan's debacle in the World Cup last year. The then PCB chief, retired Gen Tauqir Zia, appointed tough-talking Sohail as chief selector while also re-appointing former batsman Javed Miandad as coach, and another former cricketer, Ramiz Raja, as the Chief Executive of the Board. However, strains were visible in the new set-up as Sohail and Miandad openly quarreled over selection recently when New Zealand toured the country.

Things came to boil as Inzamaul Haq, who replaced Rashid Latif as captain, joined Miandad and snubbed Sohail, who was considered to be close to Zia.

Sohail appeared isolated when Zia suddenly quit two months ago citing personal reasons. Zia was replaced by former diplomat Shaharyar Khan by Pakistan President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, who is also the Patron of the PCB, hoping to clear up the mess well before the much-awaited cricket series at home with India.

Sohail, who had also been criticised for being a commentator while serving as chief selector, defended his time in the post.

"I did my job honestly and am happy that I have revived a team which, if it plays up to its potential, can beat India," he said.

"My career is as commentator so I have decided to leave (as selector) and it's not on a bitter note."

The first task of the new committee will be to choose a list of probable players for a three-match Test and five-match one-day series against India in March and April, the first series between the arch rivals in Pakistan for 14 years.

"We take the job as a challenge and hope to select the best players for the all important series against India," Bari told AFP.
PCB sources said the return of Bari could change the complexion of the team, with some of the old greats like Waqar Younis getting a chance to play again.

well at least that moron amir sohail is gone

iqbal’s son studies with me so if u guys want an autograph let me know

Here he comes commentary lovers :hehe:

Yeah, when your support is gone “I have decided to leave”… sure

BBC is painting an entirely different picture:

Bari back as Pakistan selector

Former Test captain Wasim Bari has returned as Pakistan’s chairman of selectors to replace Aamir Sohail.

Bari was initially handed the job for a 16-month period which ended when he was sacked in July 2001.

He was re-instated before being ousted again shortly after Pakistan’s sorry performance in the World Cup.

Sohail resigned after the national under-17 team he selected was opposed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan.

“I did my job honestly and am happy that I have revived a team which, if it plays up to its potential, can beat India,” said Sohail.

“My career is as a commentator so I have decided to leave and it’s not on a bitter note.”

Khan said Sohail’s input in the selection process had “led to a significant improvement in the team’s performance since the World Cup.”

Bari, meanwhile, once said: “Selection is a thankless job. You can’t always please everyone.”
