Police in Pakistan say a woman suicide bomber in a burka has blown herself up near an army checkpoint in Peshawar.

Islamist radicals have carried out a wave of suicide attacks in Pakistan in recent months, but this is thought to be the first by a woman since 9/11.

The attack happened in a neighborhood which is home to senior retired and serving army officers.

Police say the bomber - thought to be an Afghan woman in her 30s - was the only casualty.

“She was carrying a basket over her head. She blew herself up as she came close to the checkpost,” Peshawar police chief Tanvir-ul-Haq Sipra told Reuters news agency.

The BBC’s Syed Shoaib Hasan in Islamabad says the only previous suicide attack known to have been carried out by a woman in Pakistan took place in Karachi on 6 November 2000.

At least five people were killed in the blast in the offices of The Nation newspapaper.

Police never established who carried out the attack or what the motive might have been.

Lawless areas

Peshawar is a frontier city in north-west Pakistan adjoining the lawless tribal areas that run along the border with Afghanistan.

Many in the West have long regarded the tribal areas as a safe haven for Taleban and al-Qaeda militants.

But in recent months the militants have extended their activities to other areas of Pakistan, including Peshawar.

No group has said it was behind the latest attack.

In another incident, suspected militants kidnapped six Pakistani policemen in Bajaur, in the tribal areas.

Local officials are quoted as blaming the Taleban.

these people are animals

look at the way Lebanon took on these terrorists, the entire arab world backed Lebanon and all Lebanese were united

same with turkey taking on PKK, all turks are united

but when Pakistan does the same, there is so much opposition

again .. This is not the time for politcal process .. Leave mushi intact he is the best bet we can have … Destroy the terriosts, actually level them to earth or land locked their areas.after finishing the mess have election and elect mushi again. When we become economic stable then have election and elect mushi designated person. Thats the only way for paistan to have democratic process.

They are now saying that she might not have been a suicide bomber after all, because the bomb she was carrying did not have any ball bearing or shrapnel, which are usually used in such cases… Also, her upper torso was completely intact, raising suspisions that its was not designed the same way as the typical susicide bomb.

She apparently also smiled just before blowing up… They suspect she may have simply been carrying the bomb in order to plant it someplace, and it detonated prematurely..

After the tremedous defeat inflicted on the extremists by the Pak Army in Swat and adjoining areas, the terrorists are getting awfully desperate if they are employing women bombers.

they are all diff issues - the ppk gained popularity because kurds were jailed for speaking their language publicly....

the ppk or kurdish separatism will never die until they are treated fairly......i dot think the turks or others have backtracked on policies and neither have the turks been lenient on the pkk

of course theres going to be such a response in pakistan when for 30 years militancy was supported by the army and certain sections of the establishment....and now they are saying they are wrong? of course these trained fighters are going to fight back.

pakistan needs to have its OWN INDEPENDENT foreign policy and it needs to have strict codes and ethics to deal with issues.

Most of the terrorists fighting in Swat are probably not even from Swat, and many probably arent even old enough to remember the start of the Mujahideen movement against the Soviets.

Fuzalullah himself is probably in his late twenties or vry early thirties... His father in law, who ofcourse is far older, was the one who started the TSNM but he was throughly beaten and disgraced among the people of the area..

the ideology has been happily promoted until 2001! even musharaf, the leader of pakistan, an enlightened moderate, coined the term the moderate taliban.
from 1978/79 to late 2001 the definition of islam in pakistan rested with what these people said. they dont have to be in the 30's and 40's to remember 1979 in afghanistan. they can be 11 year old kids with "good" memories of what his madrassa walas were treated like pre-sept 11 and now. theres a future of militanc to be combatted and that can only happen by actually winning hearts and minds and not just tacky feel good slogans.

militancy is wrong indeed alig but you just cant wipe out ideologies - you need to solve the root cause of the problem which is the alienation of normal everyday citizens because the system is unfair, unjust, corrupt and incompetent.

there would be no baloch, taliban militancy in pakistan if the leaders did not meddle or allow large portions of the country to be ignored or exploited.

you can crush the terrorists but you cant crush the despair that leads to people behaving liek this.

it was in the name of islam these peopel were encouraged to be liek this, adopt thismentality and spread this ideology.....this is what these people have been brought to believe islam is about....for over 2 decades this Mujahideen culture was promoted in the north west of pakistan for pakistans own interests.....how will they ever acept another variation of islam or different interpretations?
