Okay, call me whatever for bashing desis but this is the truth, I’ve been hearing things like that since the age of 5 on PTV dramas, “aurat ghori hai, uss ko lagam (reigns) daal do and then you can control her”.
What’s the origin of such thinking? And do people still believe in it?

Yes they do. The Origin is our "Desi" Culture. I've said it earlier and I will say it again that its actually the weakness of the woman which leads to her being treated/controlled in this way.

Im pretty sure they still do. I don't know where it came from but it has a lot to do with the woman allowing herself to be controlled.
If she wants, she can be in charge. But our girls are rarely raised that way.

There used to be only one channel (PTV) and it used to broadcast only one drama a day from 8:00 to 9:00... don't know where you spent your childhood man. I'm assuming you're in your mid to late 20s.

i never heard that too for woman....
i always heard *mard nahata dhoota ghora hai ....*means no matter whatever he do, at the end of the day it is ALWAYS woman's fault

About the dialogue about women, I have heard and read it plenty of times! It’s all about controlling women, and most of the times, it’s other women suggesting it to their son/brother/whoever. Mein ne tou yehi parha hai.

Haha sowee - but what backward thinking it's still very visible even in the UK sometimes my parents come out with ridiculously backward things - which leads to endless debates. Where we agree to disagree - times are a-changing. Thank god education. This is what are nation needs.

my ex MIL used to taunt my mother because she did not have a son by saying " mard to sada satta aur bata hota hai jab chahay doosri shaadi kar sakta hai woh kabhi boorha thori na hota hai " ......I know what Bata is ...I don't know what Sata is ?
I still remember the statement lol ! cuz she said it like 10 times or over to my mom on different ocassions
