As everyone pointed out, its going to be bitter cold in Jan. In addition to heavy jackets and boots, bring long johns and sweat pants. The best way to deal with the cold is dress in layers. That way you can shed layers as you get warmer.

Another thing to note if you’re new to very cold weather, when you are indoors take off the warm/heavy clothing and don’t turn up the inside temp to 90 degrees (farenheit). If you body starts sweating indoors (too many clothes or very hot temp) you are going to freeze when you go outside again.

This! It’s all about layers, layers, layers. First winter here is always brutal. Good luck to you!
