A week in NY!

Hey everyone! I’m gonna be coming to NY in January on a university trip. And I wanted to know what kinda clothes to bring with me lol. I’ve never seen snow so I’m unfamiliar with the weather conditions I would be facing! Any help would be appreciated  Thaaanks!

Re: A week in NY!

Its going to be killing cold, so do bring a blanket.

Re: A week in NY!

**bringh a lots of nerve of steel to face the New York’s insane traffic, bring a lot of attitude to deal with the New Yorkers and bring a lot of money as no amount is ENOUGH! hehe :cb:

on more serious note, bring heavy jacket, woolen scarf, a woolen hat, woolen gloves, a good snow boots and a bundle of the american green$$$$$

btw, i’ll be driving TAXI in Manhattan this winter  **

Re: A week in NY!

^ howz the taxi business? i am thinking about joining :hmmm:

Re: A week in NY!

well, we are all fuelled up, rotors are turning and my business is ready to fly, iA…do you know how to fly a taxi? if yes, apply online between the hours of midnight and 1 am at www.flyNYtaxi.PIND

Re: A week in NY!

As everyone pointed out, its going to be bitter cold in Jan. In addition to heavy jackets and boots, bring long johns and sweat pants. The best way to deal with the cold is dress in layers. That way you can shed layers as you get warmer.

Another thing to note if you're new to very cold weather, when you are indoors take off the warm/heavy clothing and don't turn up the inside temp to 90 degrees (farenheit). If you body starts sweating indoors (too many clothes or very hot temp) you are going to freeze when you go outside again.

Re: A week in NY!

**RIGHT! a cap/hat is very important because 70% of body-heat-loss is thru the head [more if you happen to be bald :cb:]

once you get acclimatized to your new environment in a few years then you do NOT have to wear gloves, hat, snow boots, heavy jacket and long johns for sure JUST LIKE I DO NOT use any of those things.

**you have to be very careful if you take public transportation because ur duration of exposure can increase dramatically.

Re: A week in NY!

Meh. I spent this last winter (which was one of the harshest ones in recent memory) wearing my rainboots and little jacket and gloves. Not even a cold. :D

Re: A week in NY!

Sara516, you should mention that you were born and raised in NY. This person hasn't even seen snow yet.

Re: A week in NY!

This! It's all about layers, layers, layers. First winter here is always brutal. Good luck to you!

Re: A week in NY!

Wrong thread buddy :)

Re: A week in NY!

I'm SO glad I WON'T be seeing NYC winter this year...or ever if I can manage lolz. THREE FREAKING MONTHS OF 5 FEET HIGH SNOW PILES!!! I swear to God, it was enough to send me scampering to hell!

As for how to dress:
I'll second the long johns, thick socks, water proof boots.
T-shirts that you can wear in layers. For example, 1st layer a sleeveless, 2nd layer a long sleeved tee, 3rd layer a half sleeved tee. I've never been a fan of sweaters under jackets, but it helps to have one at hand. You can put on the light sweater on after you take off the heavy jacket indoors.

Re: A week in NY!

Thank you everyone for all of your advice! Ok I really need to go shopping for all this stuff lol. Also how high should my boots be...should I get knee-high ones?? Sorry I feel like I'm asking silly questions but I have no experience! And pleassee tell me if there is anything else I need to know about, not only specific to clothing! I'm a girl btw..thought I'd clear the confusion lol :p
