On Board Air-India One: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made it clear that India would not back off from the gas pipeline deal with Iran, saying India was short of energy and “we do need Iranian gas”.
Singh said India would go ahead with the $7bn deal to get natural gas from Iran via Pakistan, saying: **“We are severely short of energy. We are in need of energy. We are largely dependent on hydrocarbons. Our imports are already very very high. We do need Iranian gas.” **
Asked about criticism in the US Congress over India’s dealing with Iran that Washington thinks is a nuclear proliferator, Singh said that India’s ties were with the US administration. He said the Congressmen were free to say what they wanted. “We should not get waylaid by the statements of individual Congressmen. It’s (the US) is a free country,” the prime minister added.
