A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

Wayyyy back in 1996, one would occasionally see a girl or two wearing jeans in places like Clifton beach or Doleman center in Karachi (turning a particular 16 year old’s cheeks red with excitement).

Is it more common now? Watching GEO or ARY one would believe so, but TV is not reality.

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

Well...to expand on it, i would sya it's really a matter of one's own personal level of comfort...I've seen girls in defense/liberty/fortress/pace/mmalam road etc dressed in tight jeans and tanks and no i don't think they were really visiting from abroad. In some families, it would be okay to wear jeans and teeshirts to outings, and in some women would never leave hte home w/o at least a chadar.. I personally don't have any relatives who'd dress like that in Pak, I myself would never dress in pakistan the way I dress here (jeans, sweaters, tees etc) b/c thats just how i was raised. But if i were to wear jeans and stuff, i'd be more inclined to wear them in Defense than, to, say subzi mandi...

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

Ok so only a certain portion of the population is doing it, not everyone?

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

Pakistan has experienced a massive reflux in the last few years (yay for deportation). It's these families that wear jeans and tank tops because they're just more comfortable in them. As long as they look good pulling it off, I have no problem.

The problem I have is when the masi shows up with a jharoo and halter top.

*Seriously *- the real problem though is it creates a divide between the local youths and their "americanized" peers. You have kids raised in America wearing shorts to school and the locals wanting to be just like them. Today it might seem like nothing, but when these kids enter the job market we'll be facing a much bigger problem than what type of pants or shirts they wore when they were younger.

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

maasis wear that stuff?

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

Deportations happened in that big of a number? I assumed some people who had visa issues just left voluntarily because they didn't see their case going anywhere.

But why tank tops? Why not just shirt?

So with tank tops, I am to assume regular deodorant use?

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

Yes, the dragnet of 2002 caused HUGE self-deportations.I think close to 30% of all illegal Pakistanis had left America within months after 9/11.

Why a tank top? Because...thats what people wear when its hot?

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

Pakistani girls wearing jeans in Pak look oddly out of place... Im sure people, esp. men must give them stares. Wonder how they put up with all the pseudo conservative pervs?!?

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

i really dont think only conservative pervs stares hot chix in jeans n top .......

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

Yeah, thats true... But half the time you would be hard pressed to find anyone in Pak, who if only on the face of things, claimed to be anything but conservative...

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

n wats so wrong wid tht ?

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

Not a thing... Except they are just what I said, pseudo conservative who turn into complete pervs when given half a chance...

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

I think people should be entitled to wear what they want within reason. There should be more diversity and tolerance in Pakistan.

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

well no gal go to jumma bazar, or sabzi mandi.

y would they go to jumma bazar, wahan aisa milta kia hai khass?

i mean its common sense brother. even in sabzi mandi you have to go early in the morning to get fresh sabzi, near the dawn :smack: (its a whole sale fruit and vegetable place, not some fashion show arena )

atleast i m never heard of any “sabzi thekedar” kinda gal. :smack:

-btw didnt u see new trend of pants kind of shalwar?

  • also i have seen too much of crap in shalwar kameez (cuts and styles) that i think they are better off wearing pants-jeans then shalwar kameez (if they are rich n burger). :smack:

and no at all gals are like that.

i personally believe if they covered themselves (not visibly showing body parts) than any dress of any culture is fine, otherwise these days shalwar kameez is also not less :bummer:

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

^ :hehe:
Why would they look out of place? What is wrong with you guys?
I would rather that I wear proper, nice cut jeans with tunic or a kurti than the knee length capri with kameez or that patiala shalwar with the shortest possible shirt/kameez available, hardly enough to cover the front and back flare of the shalwaar.

On the other hand, skin tight revealing jeans and fitted shirts with hijab on top is also a big no no.

And if you have particular areas in mind then yes, people, even girls go to that famous Defence Sunday bazaar with trousers/jeans on and its not a big deal.

In the end, its all about modesty, some people believe in it, some don’t. Its about how you carry yourself, some people can do that with aplomb while others can’t. We are no one to pass judgements.

Re: A Very Stupid Question. Western attire is OK for girls now in Pakistan?

I think pant-shirt/skirt clad ladies are still a minute population of Pakistan though they are in increasing numbers. In Karachi, you won’t find them in Liaquatabad, FB Area, may be some areas in Nazimabad… but probably more in PECHS, Clifton, DHA.

Ladies goto all such bazaar i.e. jumma bazar, mangal bazar, budh bazaar etc… for bargain items.
