a very strange problem

i use wireless internet
which means there is wireless router sitting in the lounge and I have wireless adapter installed on my desktop. It connects perfectly and gives excellent signal strength. I can open and browse all website with out any problems.

BUT

  • MSN messenger does not sign in and even MSN webmessenger does not sign in
  • Youtube opens perfect;y but it does not play any vidoes any more. it played 2-3 videos when i 1st connected to the network. Then i tried a different browser and it again played few videos only. so moved to another browser and it played few videos and that was it. none of the browsers play any of the youtube videos. not even thru facebook or google search or thru GS
  • It plays all flash videos other then you tube. etc dailymotion, facebook, google video
  • I cant post in threads… GS or any other forum, not even on facebook and most of the times it gives me a php file to download
  • some times it allows me to post in threads but only 1 line messages. any message longer than few lines does not go thru

I thought problem is with the ISP but the house owner says it works fine for them
we dont use any security keys like WEP etc instead he has activated MAC filter
I have tried updating drivers for my adapter but no improvement
I have been using this setup (computer/OS/wirelessNetworkAdapter) for more than 2 years now, never had any problems until I moved into this new place.

so basically it doesn’t let me perform any of my fav activities on the internet :bummer:

*I could not post this thread using my wireless network so I used my mobile broadband (phone as modem and provider as ISP on a 3G network) but it has 500MB limit and it disconnects all the time :frowning:

any solutions please ?

Re: a very strange problem

ur wireless box, is it connecting your network to internet via cable or dsl ? (not related, for my curiousity).

  1. can u do this step and report back. on the wireless router, identify the port that connects your internet to your network (ethernet port, wired port, WAN port, UPLINK port, all same kinda thing for identifying what I am trying to point at). IF you have ability/choice to select that WAN/UPLINK/eth/wired port's speed, (100mb full duplex, 100mb half duplex, 10mb full duplex, 10mb half duplex), can you select 10mb half duplex, disconnect internet, disconnect*power , shutoff the wireless box, wait for 3 minutes, connect power, startup wireless box,

and report here.

  1. download "TCP OPTIMIZER", click on OPTIMUM SETTINGS, and change MTU setting to 1482, hit apply and restart your computer.

do #1 first, check out your findings/results, note them down, then do #2 and report here.

Re: a very strange problem

I think it is not a router issue or your cable provider . There is something wrong with the software you are running on your system . It looks like a protocol issue to me , where your system cannot communicate with the servers correctly .

You should try uninstalling network from your system and reinstalling it again . If problem persists then try reinstalling the whole OS .

Btw have you tried your system with some other network ? Does it behave the same ?

Re: a very strange problem

confused: we are using ADSL and it is an ADSL modem router and uses a regular port like on modems or like the ones we use for land line phone. other 2 computers at home work fine *they say. i m gonna try the 2nd step now.

Nami: yar it works fine when I connect to my mobile broadband so there is nothing wrong with TCP/IP or the operating system. it has been working fine for 2 years on many different networks.

some times i cant post a word on any forum or facebook. so I just restart the browser and starts to post few lines of text thru

duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude, i want kiss you right now, literally lol :shikra:

this 2nd step worked, my youtube is working now after 2 months :hayaa:

Re: a very strange problem

alright confused :lifey:

See it was a protocol issue :yahoo:

Good to see it get fixed :jhanda:

pata nahy yar, it worked fine on all other networks

i used, no stole some elses wireless few times lol

Re: a very strange problem

^ tabhi kharab howa ha ... :D

Re: a very strange problem

neah, stealing wouldnt aid or factor in any way of these symptoms..

these symptoms that lafanter described, i remember seeing them quite a few times, but really long ago.. (I used to fiddle with tcp stack of windows nt 4 quite a bit) ..when dsl first came in, i was trying to modify tcp settings to download the fastest possible speeds.. (teenager, cheap computer, all time in the world) .. i remember on default windows nt/2000 systems, if i put values of tcp too high (larger blocks, less transmission), only cable internet use to be fast+stable..

on dsl, it works opposite, because dsl "blocks" need to be smaller, carrying more transmission (the way physical phone lines are made, lower capacity over larger distances).

so for future, keep this "TCP OPTIMIZER" handy, its a single file, and for dsl connections, whatever your symptoms are, its always good to start with a 1452MTU setting, upgrade to 1482 if symptoms gets fixed..

(i figured these days 1482 for a dsl is pretty standard)...

oh, and try downloading a larger file from a "www" source, it will be instantly faster

Re: a very strange problem

OK. confused pra i need your help

my internet has died suddenly for no apparent reason. Now it doesnt even browse. It just loads the page title and thats it. :(

Re: a very strange problem

were you using Windows Vista???
Windows Vista has a common MTU size problem

Re: a very strange problem

no its an old XP

Re: a very strange problem

try MTU setting of 1452 ? and connection speed of 1000k

Re: a very strange problem

didnt work

Re: a very strange problem

ok, lets try something really close to the basement-level of communication. open up MY NETWORK PLACES, right click on your connection thats giving u problems, properties, highlight INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) and uncheck it, press ok, if any messages show up, accept them/authorize removal.

  • { * restart * } -

go to that network connection, right click, properties, if there is a listing of **INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) **check it, and hit ok, it might ask you for surity as without tcp/ip u lose CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS and FILE AND PRINT SHARING FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS. authorize whatever needed.

(if u cant see the listing of INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP), then click install, its a "PROTOCOL" and usuaully listed under "MICROSOFT CORPORATION").

if u need to restart, do so, and then open up TCP OPTIMIZER. modify your connection to reflect:

1000k connection speed,
1452 MTU setting,
under ADVANCED SETTINGS, use CUSTOM SETTINGS click, and under MaxConnectionsPerServer, use 20. same for MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server (20 connections).

if u did everything right, these maxconnections boxes should be sitting at "10" each. (meaning ur tcp/ip protocol was uninstalled/installed correctly).

  • { * restart * } -

i got two more solutions after this one fails, (one of them is backing up ur songs/videos/documents/bookmarks/settings and reformatting windows). but will leave this one to be the last solution. try this and see

Re: a very strange problem

still not working

when i connect through other network adapters it works fine. I think there is some issue with this wireless card like its not compatible or some thing.

we use a ADSL modem then a D-Link wireless router.

Re: a very strange problem

if other adapters, same computer, and problem goes away, then i guess its the adapter, try with new drivers..

Re: a very strange problem

^^ ditto

Re: a very strange problem

what the CAPITAL F

yesterday I bought a new wireless USB adapter and asked my landlord to add this device to the network but he didnt and just now informed that internet has not been working for few days cause they are going to switch to a new ISP :frowning:
