A twist on the prom...

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/02/us/hamtramck-high-holds-all-girl-prom.html

Someone on my FB posted the link to this today. Now it has become an argument over there.A group of people think that it is a sad affair and that we lead double lives in the USA and find substitutes for everything. The other group thinks that there is nothing wrong with it,and it is just some fun without a compromise on principles.

I personally have not been able to see anything wrong with it.Or is it really a double life thing?
Opinions…??

Re: A twist on the prom...

not a double-life thing. there's nothing unIslamic about fun.

Re: A twist on the prom...

What is so double life about this?

Re: A twist on the prom…

Exactly, confused on how this is a “double life”??? :konfused:

Re: A twist on the prom...

I think it's great! The girls showed initiative and I think it is really admirable. I also love that many non-muslim students attended this prom as well. Kudos to these girls for organizing the event.

Re: A twist on the prom...

wow, great idea. my high school prom should have been like that :) lovely!

Re: A twist on the prom...

This isn't a double life.

Re: A twist on the prom...

Exactly.I was not able to see the person's point on FB either. He kept on stressing that the girls were trying to hard to fit in.And they were finding substitutes and that they danced and all that and wore the abaayas and scarves again when it was prayer time.I failed to see what was wrong with all that.It was a girls-only thing so why would they need pardah during that and they were not doing anything wrong, just having fun the halal way.
It actually became quite a debate in my news feed last night..!

Re: A twist on the prom...

well done to the organizers......good for the girls that attended!
not a double-life at all.

hopefully others will follow the lead....

Re: A twist on the prom...

Basically it's like the Arab women party? _

Re: A twist on the prom...

Is this really considered a 'sad affair' in US? lol

Don't they have all girls/all boys high school or Catholic schools over there? Thats how proms are usually done in those schools and its considered perfectly normal here...

Re: A twist on the prom...

Did any of you actually go to your high school prom? I did.

Re: A twist on the prom...

^I did.

Re: A twist on the prom...

There is no harm in it.

I never ever asked my parents if I can go. I assumed their answer would be no.

Couple years later my sister asked but parents said no. She did go to the post prom with her friends.

Couple years more later... My brother went with a date and parents didn't say anything.

Re: A twist on the prom...

I went to my high school prom as well, and it was fun. Dateless, but danced all night. Didn't do the hotel party afterwards - wasn't interested. Most people actually went home once the prom finished.

Re: A twist on the prom...

^same

Re: A twist on the prom...

yes....I went too......dateless but had a blast........along with three other desi friends that went dateless.
we did do the after party thing but it was simply going to a club, which was boring......and then to a friend's house for a sleep-over.

Re: A twist on the prom...

great.....thanks for planting that seed in my mind!!!
just when I thought this might be an option for my child......

Re: A twist on the prom...

^ Would you stop your child going to their high school prom, the same way we did? I don't see myself stopping him .... we knew what our limits were.

Re: A twist on the prom...

What is an Arab women party..??...sorry if this is a dumb question...!
