At his peak there was simply no bowler to touch him. The most devastating fast bowler in the history of the game at that time…he has fallen off slightly in the last few years due to age and back injuries and is no longer lightening quick but he has still got all the guile…
But ** at his peak (1989-1993) ** he was simply in a class all by himself. Even now he has the greatest strike rate for a fast bowler with over 200 wickets in the game’s history…
When you add this to his 350+ wickets in both forms of the game (a feat bettered only by Wasim Akram) …there is none like him!
and THIS was his record up to and including the 1993 season when he was at his peak:
Amazing! In 26 matches he had 148 wickets at an ave of 18.55 and a strike rate of 36.2 including 16 (!) 5 wicket innings!! And at that time his speed was clocked at 156 kph too!!!
Yes, Waqar had the GREATEST PEAK of all time. As a bowler he is below Akram and Ambrose if you take there careers throughout, and not an isolated time period where that man Younis was more like a God amongst men.
He became very famous on the English county cirucit as the "toe crusher", for his fast yorker which used to give many batsmen a very sore toe. Also around the county scene the batsmen who used to get out to his yorker use to say that they got "Waqared". That is some tribute to his ability at his peak.
Great job Asif.
He is one of the best indeed.
Master of reverse swing yoker.
I haven't seen any better bowler blow the stumps off the batsman like Waqar has done in the past 13 years.
I remember in the very first match against India where Tendulkur also made his debut, he bowled an unexpected bounce on the slow pitch of Pakistan and that surprised Tendulkur and end up breaking his fingers.
That was a great site to watch!
His peek was the best to watch.
He is kind of like Richards of bowling. At his best he could knock out any of the oppostion batsman.
He may not hold records like Wasim but he is almost equalent to Wasim's greatness.
