For the first time in the history f Pakistan, lawyers have shown unpredented unity beyond all political affiliations and beyond ethnicity and language.
Such activism has never been seen before. They have sungle handedly taken up the issue of CJ and the political parties are only trying to cash up or trying half-heartedly to be among the martyrs by smearing fake blood upon their faces.
After failure of confrontational policy during the last ten days the Musharraf government has decided to pursue a conciliatory strategy to handle the ongoing judicial crisis, TheNation learnt reliably on Sunday
The decision to change strategy was taken at a meeting held here under President General Pervez Musharraf at the Prime Minister House that was attended by the Ministers, State Ministers, three governors, and two chief ministers.
According to the sources, under the changed strategy, the meeting decided to remove all restrictions around the residence of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, the sources added. It was decided to let him meet whomever he wanted to in the hope that he might damage his own image by meeting politicians and media persons. **The President also instructed, “all the ministers must stand up and be confident while meeting the media people, as we should sing and swing together,” the sources said.
**According to the sources, the President said that the attack on the private Tv Channel was a conspiracy against him upon which Railways Minister Shiekh Rashid Ahmed suggested that he should not have said it as a conspiracy against him alone but it was conspiracy against the government and the country. The sources said that the President was in an upbeat mood but admitted that the issue was mishandled.
**He also praised the efforts of ministers namely Wasi Zafar, Muhammad Ali Durrani, and Ali Asjad Malhi in defending the government over the issue at every forum, the sources said.
**The President asked the ministers and the ministers of state that people should be prepared before attending TV talk shows. “Those who meet the media should go with a conviction,” the sources said adding that many sitting in the audience wondering as to where from should they get conviction.
One of the participants pointed out that “the prime was not seen anywhere, he should have stood up and defended you (President) and the crisis,” upon which the President looked at the Prime Minister, the sources said. According to the sources the President directed the Prime Minister and the participants of the meeting to keep a vigil on the students and the traders lest they join the movement.
The sources said that the President also disagreed with the Chief Minister Punjab’s strategy to handle the lawyers. “Lawyers should be allowed to protest the way they want to and should have been handled in a much better way,” the sources quoted the President as saying.
According to the sources, Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi explained by saying that he had stopped lawyers trying to reach Rawalpindi from eight to nine districts while the President repeated, “well there are better ways to handle them.”
**According to the sources a media committee is being formed to handle the media in the government’s advantage while the names of the members of the committee have not yet been decided. The committee would be responsible to provide material for the TV talk shows.
**“We are all united behind it, we do not want confrontation with anyone, but the one crossing the line of law would not be spared,” a cabinet member requesting not to be named quoted the President as addressing the high profile gathering at the PM House.
To a question of rumors about the cabinet reshuffle, he said, it was the job of rumor mongers and there was nothing on ground neither anywhere discussed in the meeting as such. http://nation.com.pk/daily/mar-2007/19/index1.php
