Kumar Sanu was also my fav singer from 90-95 era. I might have been his biggest fan in those days. He stunned the listeners with his mega hit jub koi baat bigar jaye in Jurm in 89. The song became the best song of that year too. Then he blasted with Aashiqui’s sound track, which still comes in the best movie albums of all times in India. People realised that he is the singer who can fill the gap caused by Kishore’s death back in 85’. We all know how bad the music was in late 80s after Kishore’s departure.
Interesting fact is that Lata denied to sing with Kumar Sanu for 5 years, saying he is not a singer, but he just have a good voice, until she sang Tujhe Dekha Tou with him. Sadhna Sargam, Asha Bhosle and Anuradha Pudwal sang beautiful duets with him. But it was Alka Yagnik who teamed up with Kumar and N-S duo and ruled the bollywood in early 90s. They became a trademark for hit soundtracks.
Having said that he had a very manly and deep voice which was unique in India, also that he was Kishore’s clone, however for last 7-8 years he has been very nasal and has lost his vocal quality very badly. He is no more pleasure to ears as compare to his 'ashiqui, sajan, dil hai ke maanta nahi, sadak, aiena, maashooq, rang, bazigar, phir teri kahani yad ayi and the great Love Story 1942 days. Since then, he has managed to sing only couple of good songs like ‘tujhe dekha, payalein chun mun and kasoor’ etc.
His name is in Gennius book of world record for recording 28 songs in just one day. He also won 5 consecutive filmfare awards, which no other singer ever did. He is also, like Kishore, being copied both in India and Pakistan widely. Even in his presence in industry, Babul Supriyo, his clone, is singing in his style, like a second kumar sanu. But he is singing like kumar’s early days, which ppl and music directors like too. Unfortunately, Kumar Sanu can’t sing like that anymore. But he will be remembered for this work he has done in the industry. Infact the rebound of bollywood in early 90s was mainly based on the superb music produced by Nadeem Shravan. In those days, every 7 out of 10 movies had N-S music, and every 8 out of 10 songs average had Kumar Sanu’s voice. So his contributation in the industry’s boom are well observed.
