A teddy without a face!

So a couple of days ago, for the first time in my life, I saw a pink teddy bear that had no eyes or face or lips at the home of a very “Islamically sound” family. They believe that our kids shouldn’t play with anything that has defined features.

Also, they’ve blacked out all the faces on the books they have home with a permanent marker.

So my kids were a bit confused and asked me if we weren’t good muslims as we have regular stuff at home. I had to select my words carefully as I didn’t want to over edify them or justify our choice of lifestyle. I told them that we try our best and pray to Allah for more hidayah.

While I salute them for their firm belief, I’m not sure if this is taking it a bit too far? What do you say?

Re: A teddy without a face!

It sounds creepy.

Re: A teddy without a face!

I don't have kids and I'm not married. But I'm very good with kids AlhamdliAllah so I'll answer from my perspective.

That sounds whack. I agree that's taking it a bit too far. But tell your kids that Allah loves that more than the likes of seventy Niksiks heh heh heh :) So InshaAllah they are and will be good Muslims and you all are trying as family to live a good life as per Islam and God is Al Raheem - The Merciful! And its really impressive they asked you those questions. That's very sensible of those kids! MashaAllah!

Imagine reading those Enid Blyton books without pictures :( And no comics :( Life would not be the same!

Re: A teddy without a face!

It's a bit much imo, wonder what the parents will do when the kids start school.. or maybe they will homseschool.. Either way tho it'll be near impossible to avoid pictures/photos/models of the faces of living things wherever they are..

Regarding blacked out magazines and books a lot of scholars say photos are ok whilst pictures/paintings of living things are not cos in the case of photos we're just 'capturing' rather than 'creating'.. Obviously those who are stricter would go with the opinion that both are haram tho..

Aisha (ra) played with a doll but it's been argued that was just a rag doll and didn't have actual features like the dolls we have today..

Re: A teddy without a face!

I think it’s down to your own personal prefrence.

I think that editing everything is very puritanical, however sometimes realism is also important. What if you need to teach the same children about first aid, or about how to look for danger in other people, body language etc… It’s all fine at an early age but at some point they will need to know things in more detail.

As far as i’m concerned so long as there is no nefarious activity with concern to such toys I would not mind. But if my child kept poking out features then I’d be worried… perhaps a balance is needed. :hmmm:

Re: A teddy without a face!

If that is the belief why bring a teddy bear in the house? or book with pictures.

Re: A teddy without a face!

i knew a family with similar thinking...never went to their house again. weirdos

Re: A teddy without a face!

Exactly.

Re: A teddy without a face!

Highly highly creepy.

Re: A teddy without a face!

I think it is perhaps strange but we should still respect everyone regardless of how strange it seems...

I know that it seems daft but belief is a powerfull force. That said I think we should not force or let anyone else force thier belief on anyone. With regards to children everyone has the right to do what they think is best for the child... within limits offcourse.

I think from an Islamic point of veiw this is not such a serious issue, it's down to preference. Some people like to sit and eat on ground level, others like to be seated on chairs... now while eating in the former manner may be Sunnah there is no sin in doing the latter.

Sorry to go all Molvi on you guys dont worry i'm not an Alim :)

Re: A teddy without a face!

nice post. :k:

Re: A teddy without a face!

That really is taking it too far. Those kids will have boring, unmemorable childhoods.

Re: A teddy without a face!

the guy i know put permanent marker all over the new doll of his daughter...that's just sad.

Re: A teddy without a face!

It is, why buy the doll in the first place? He should just train her to play with cars or boy stuff lol. Does the guy expect his daughter to never see a face in a picture or a photo ever?

Re: A teddy without a face!

How sad. How very sad.

Re: A teddy without a face!

That is so so creepy...!!

Re: A teddy without a face!
