Below is a humble suggestion.
Since GS is a Pakistani website, maybe we should, like PTV or other Pakistani media such as Pakistani newspapers and radio, fully observe all the occasions which are observed in Pakistan, all over the forums similar to how, and with the same zeal as, they are commemorated in Pakistan. This will be educational and will also keep Gupshup and guppies side by side with what’s happening in Pakistan.
For example, right now it’s Moharram and there are programs and articles about Moharram in PTV and newspapers and magazines all over Pakistan. Plus, people organize events in their homes to observe this month.
In each GS forum there could be an official thread, with a stickie, observing Moharram in some way, which should be up there for the whole month, corresponding to the duration that it is being observed in Pakistan.
Most events, such as Moharram or Eid or Independence Day, are observed in Pakistan in a way that it covers all aspects of existence or life. Thus it will be possible to observe them throughout the GS forums too.
For example, for Moharram, here are some arbitrary suggestions:
GupShup Cafe´: There could be a thread asking guppies to share their person memories or experiences about Moharram.
General: There could be a thread discussing some issue about Moharram from an intellectual perspective.
Shor Sharaba: There could be a discussion about Moharram programs being shown on PTV/ Prime TV and other Pakistani media.
Image Gallery: There could be images showing Moharram processions, or other images related to the month.
Audio Gallery: There could be a thread with lectures of religious scholars about Moharram, or marseeah’s or noha’s or recordings of majlis gatherings, or just people talking about their Moharram experiences.
Pakistan Affairs: There could be a thread about the political steps taken by the Pakistani government to ensure peace during Moharram, about how Moharram is politicized by politicians, or just something related to Pakistani politics and Moharram.
Religion: There could be a non-controversial, purely informational thread educating people about what Moharram is and why and how it should be observed.
World Affairs: There could be a thread about how Muslims all over the world are observing Moharram and the messages different politicians of countries have given about Moharram.
Society, Culture & Literature: There could be a discussion about Moharram from a cultural aspect and how it is culturally observed, with majalis, maatam, sabeelein, cooking haleem in neighborhoods etc.
Poetry: There could be a thread containing marseeay or nohay or other Moharram related poetry.
Lifestyles: There could be a thread about recipes of food that is cooked specially in Moharram. For example, haleem or daal khichra, special Moharram sharbat etc.
Career and Academics: Maybe a discussion about the scholars who have written works on the events around Moharram, or some good books to read on the subject.
Business & Economics: Maybe a discussion about how the Pakistani economy or stock exchange is affected by Moharram, if people have vested financial interests in commemorating Moharram or doing maatam etc.
Computer Talk: Maybe people could share some Media files they have created about Moharram?
Travel & Tourism – There could be a thread about Hz Imam Hussain Rz’s mazaar or Karbala with some facts that would interest people from a religious visitor’s perspective.
(I skipped the forums for which I couldn’t think of an aspect of Moharram which relates to those forums.)
This could be done for the whole of Moharram or till Ashura only, or only on the day of Ashura.
Moharram is a religious occasion but other occasions such as Basant or Inependence day could be observed with the same zeal as well, and the feel could be religious or celebratory etc, corresponding to the event being commemorated.
Also, if its hard work, these threads don’t have to be created each year, they could simply be refreshed each year. If the threads are created each year, then a thread could be opened about a different aspect of the event, as it relates to that forum, each year.
The point is to just officially observe the events that are observed in Pakistan on Gupshup as well.
