Camilla Parker Bowles was welcomed to what was probably the biggest charity event in London in recent years with a kiss on the cheek from Elton John, joining an exclusive audience of millionaires and celebrities for the concert at the capital’s Somerset House. She arrived at the event, for which she had chosen to wear a flattering off-the-shoulder gown by Robinson Valentine, 30 minutes before her companion the Prince of Wales.
The guest list for the glamorous bash to raise funds for the children’s charity Absolute Return For Kids (ARK) was an organisers’ dream, combining serious money – Getty and Rothschild – with glittering names from the worlds of fashion, TV and high society.
Among the guests were Elle Macpherson, Joanna Lumley and Jemima Khan. Newly svelte model Sophie Dahl was squired to the event by Tim Jefferies, with whom she had been spotted strutting her stuff on the dance floor earlier in the week at the Serpentine Gallery summer party.
The black-tie gala, which was co-hosted by Lord Rothschild and wealthy society hostess Lily Safra, kicked off with a champagne and canapé reception in the courtyard of Somerset House followed by a candlelit meal in a marquee. Sir Elton, who donned a sequinned jacket with face motif on the back for the evening, also performed a mini concert.
Money for ARK, which supports projects aimed at helping children whose lives are blighted by abuse and illness, was raised through an auction of various “lots”. These included a day’s shooting down at Madonna and Guy Richie’s Wiltshire estate, a game of doubles with Elton and French Davis Cup team captain Guy Forget and a chance to meet Arsenal football stars.
The evening was expected to raise £3 million.
