A sickness

The following paragraph, taken from a report in Dawn today makes me sick.

…“In accordance with the wishes of Mr Jamali, Chaudhry Shujaat accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and MNA Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, called on him in the presence of his cousin and former Balochistan chief minister, Mir Jan Mohammad Jamali, at the Balochistan House.”

The liberal use of the title Chaudhry and Mir, smacks of a feudal monopoly, unshackled and very much in power despite all of Pakistan’s alleged advances towards liberalisation. The feudality within this paragraph is even more galling given the background to this story, that Mr Jamali, a former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has agreed to settle the war of words with Shujaat only if it is within the context of a family Jirga.

So here we have feudalism at its most primal, practised by past, and probably future, leaders of our country.

Re: A sickness

Aloo…how does a title such as Chaudhry or Mir smack of feudalism? These are very common last names in parts of Pakistan. Most Chaudhries I know are dirt poor.
